Here again is the plainly finished section, which I don't think they mentioned.

Credit to Mike for the picture

Maybe this is hand-finished, but plain. That seems likely the case. As I said in the previous thread, I may be mistaken on the machine-finishing, my apologies.

Yes...they mentioned to my friend...

 By: CL : April 11th, 2018-09:50
all hand finished. I don't see the point of decorating this part. Do you ? smile

Well, that helps to settle it!

It should be decorated for the same reason the dial facing parts are decorated. As Longfellow wrote:
"In the elder days of Art, Builders wrought with greatest care. Each minute and unseen part; For the Gods see everywhere."

But clean circular grain done well is certainly finishing

I would like to see this watch in person for sure!

Porcelain, which should be more durable, as well as traditional [nt]

It really depends what you mean

 By: CL : April 11th, 2018-10:02
by decoration. If it is finished by hand , it means it is 'decorated' but still it can be 'plain'. Not all decoration needs to be fancy or stunning, some can be subtle. Now you make me want to open up the watch and take a photo...haha

I know what you mean, but the wrist shots are enough!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : April 11th, 2018-10:23
You arm looks more powerful in one of them!
I think of the high-end pieces I have been considering, it seems like the Eichi II strikes one of the best balances between wearability and service support combined with top-tier finishing.

Actually Lange fits the bill too...

 By: CL : April 11th, 2018-10:25
So are Journes in term of service.

Yes, Lange and Journe are in the sweet spot as well!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : April 11th, 2018-11:27
The Eichi may have the best finishing of all, though.

Honestly...you don't spend too much time

 By: CL : April 11th, 2018-13:11
looking at those finishing. It's great that if they are super finish but some watch does not require that. It really depends.

That makes sense. May I ask what drew you to the Eichi II? [nt]

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : April 11th, 2018-16:12
I haven't seen it in person, but I thought the finishing would be a main draw! I love the blue hands/blue markers. How about you?

Don't open your watch = here are all my photos from that day

My watch compared to showcase watches

First Eichi I got to see

backside

closeup

on the bench, a partially-completed movement

in the movement holder/jig with test stem

cleaning off the movement circuit board

another angle - that area under discussion is clamped by the case and I don't think anyone would find value in decorating a non-functional, non-visible part such as edges of plates or back of dials are usually rough

the back of the watch again

a different angle

closer up (I was obsessed with this dial)

more (I told you)

working in Micro Studio to paint the dial

more dial work

again

creating sonnerie or repeater parts

one-off piece for a repeater - no point in making jigs if they need only one or two

they work from blueprints and create as necessary

decorating - do you call this "by hand" or "by machine"? I say by hand-guided machine

end of photo stream at Seiko!

now to What's His Name in Switzerland - same process - is this by machine or by hand?

Closing with Credors

Enjoy that watch - it's one I adore. Last week in the Netherlands we went to a Delft studio - I will do a post on it soon. [Correction - earlier I said Delft ceramics, but it is more properly called "stoneware" as ceramic is a different type of clay]

I am absolutely in love with this watch. And your pictures only make me even more convinced about it. I am, though, still working on my feelings regarding the electric circuit. If that is ok in a watch like this? As I said, I am working on it!!! What would dear Mr Daniels have said about that???!!! The rest is perfect. To me, even better that...whats hi name!
thank you, Sir!

When in Japan I asked "Why did you use the Spring Drive in the Sonnerie, the Minute Repeater, the Eichi?"

 By: cazalea : April 11th, 2018-11:43
They said,

"Because it is our best movement"

"Because it is our quietest movement"

"Because it is our most accurate movement powered by a watch spring"

If you already have a traditional good mechanical watch...

 By: CL : April 11th, 2018-12:11
which I am sure you do, then this Eichi 2 will be a good partner to show the evolution of time but still stay true to the past. It does not use battery :P

Beautiful watch! If I remember correctly Dr. Daniels wrote that

 By: maxmanzo : April 11th, 2018-12:34
Each generation of movement shall be more accurate than the previous, so he should be happy with spring drive. Maybe we should ask Mr. Smith.
Best, Max

I also suspect he would favor it. My statement was just a bad way to express my hesitation that this part creates in me. But I must also make clear that it is an uneducated doubt. I watched a nice video about it on YouTube. But I feel a watch of this caliber and price demands a deeper commitment to understanding the concept behind it.

Your hesitation is very well understandable, my dear Christian.

We are in fact debating of mechanical wristwatches, in the end. When I read your post, I also immediately thought of what Dr. Daniels could have said about the new Zenith Defy Lab escapement, mainly built by silicon, which is impossible to decorate... My own opinion is that he would have been amazed.
Ours is a great passion but this world is very complicated (pun intended!) and a lot of study is required. I'm new to it as well and, regarding my previous post, I have to thank wifey who gifted me "Watchmaking" for Christmas (and the statement on accuracy is in the introduction!!). A tough reading to digest!
Moreover, we all encourage different opinions and if you do not feel comfy with electronic regulator, in my humble view, you have the right to be so! It all depends on what YOU value in a watch.
Kindest,
Max

I think the conclusion I have come to today after studying the spring drive concept a bit further, is that I will try it out in one of the more entry level models. It really is intriguing. I’m sure it is worth trying out, and they offer some really nice models that I’m sure I would enjoy. Jumping straight in the water with the Eichi ll is too big a commitment, I feel. As you say, this hobby is about emotion. The rest of the watch checks all boxes. So now my search for the right spring drive will begin smile
Sincerely
Christian
