The Astrarium of Giovanni Dondi dell'Orologio
A complex astronomical clock built between 1348 and 1364 in Padova, Italy, by the doctor/clock-maker Giovanni Dondi dell'Orologio. The Astrarium had seven faces and 107 moving parts; it showed the positions of the sun, the moon and the five planets then known, as well as religious feast days. It was one of the first mechanical clocks to be built in Europe.

... from the historical and scientific point of view, other astronomical timepieces would beat it in accuracy and complexity. I recall that Rolf Schnyder acquired one of the few good reconstructions of Dondi's Astrarium and exhibited it in Ulysse Nardin's entrance hall. Don't know if it's still there.

There is evidence even of such a gear as early as 70 BC ...
... while the gears necessary to drive a planetarium have not been found on the remnants of the Antikythery mechanism, there is some evidence that the five planets visible to the naked eye had been displayed by hands.
If I only had enough money to buy one of Hublot's interpretations of that magnificent mechanism!

Myself, I own a Planetarium made by Ulysse Nardin, and, yes, I had the pleasure and privilege to meet Rolf Schnyder several times.

Congratulations on owning such an awesome watch. I was wondering what gadgets, i.e. "contraptions", existed to utilize the gearing for the 5 planets circa 70 bc...
Who used them and for what purpose? Purely scientific? Or more astrologic, as in religious/predictive/seer-ative?
