Ferrier Classic Origin v Square
Friends,
I have decided my next acquisition will be a LF. I just love almost every model he releases and his overall vision. But I’m torn between the Classic Opaline and the Square Micro-Rotor. Here are stock photos from the LF website of the two watches I am considering. The Opaline seems far more popular on this forum, but I also love the Square Retro model. I’m hoping those who own either watch can help me decide between the two. I’m not asking which is better, of course. There is no objective answer, and to my eyes, both are beautiful. On the one hand, it would be nice to have a micro-rotor, for which LF is understandably known. But I also love the perfect simplicity - with just the right amount of flair - of the the Opaline. Perhaps the critical factor for me at this point is that I would like the watch to be on the more casual side. I have plenty of dress watches and am looking for something I can wear casually. Not a sport watch, to be sure, but suitable with jeans and a polo on weekends. Can anyone give their insights on wearing these two watches? I know the Square is a bit larger, and while I have relatively small wrists, I have tried one on in the metal and am comfortable with the size (it’s only 47.4mm lug to lug). All thoughts welcome. All I would say is, take enough time for your decision
because it is really hard.
From a visual point of view, they all look great.
I love the Classic and the Montre Ecole a lot and especially the Classic fits like a glove
on my 18cm wrist.
For me, the Square was too clumsy and not really comfy on my wrist,
while the Classic I don't feel at all.
That's why I said, take enough time for your decision, every wrist is different,
even when it has the same size.

Cushion case for me
In that dial configuration, either colour works. He did a really nice porcelain dial a few years back with tall / condensed numerals all round and red accents (below), great combination

But a little niche, considering the competition within his own ranges
It is a matter of movements. some will prefer the more sophisticated micro rotor, others will love the simplicity of the manual winding. I would go Classic Opaline.

I usually prefer manual winds. My only apprehension here is whether the Classic is too dressy for me right now as I no longer wear my dressier watches as I used to. But the fact that it is titanium suggests to me that it can be dressed down for more casual wearing with the right strap. Thank you.
No, my friend, not that formal. It adds some coolness to elegance. This is exactly the target I am trying to lock. ;)

I won’t be surprised if LF issues another version of the Classic with a different dial color soon. The green dial LE sold out quickly, I believe, and I’ve heard that the white Opaline model has been selling well, perhaps in part because of the lower price point (in comparison to other LF models) but also because the watch is, IMHO, captivating.
What a nice decision to ponder — I would go with the cushion case (it is more distinctive) and I like the clean dial of this watch better than the alternative

It has a case form that’s not often seen. And for me the Square has more wrist presence, is much more casual and definitely … cooler. And has a purer dial with even more power.
But that’s just my personal taste. And I don't have a bad conscience either, because you asked for it.

I had the same dilemma
With basically the same two choices. I really liked the cushion shape, numerals and the micro rotor movement on the square. I always found that movement to epitomize LF. When thinking of my use, mainly a weekend watch, I realized I didn't actually need a micro rotor and I wanted a manual wind. The origin was kind of new to me, but on investigation it checked all the boxes. Thay is what I ended up with. I love the case shape, the hands, the dial, the movement.... all very elegant, but I don't think dressy. Maybe it is the strap (which I likely will switch out), but I wear it with jeans and a sweatshirt mostly. No wrong choice here.

Though both are beautiful watches independently, yet if I've to choose one, I'll go for classic as more colorful dial makes it more beautiful

I believe either of these works well for a casual use. While that opinion seems obvious for the square case, the classic case gets dressed down because of the sector dial and the numerals on the railroad track adjacent to the bezel.
Two reasons I prefer the classic are: 1) the “smoothed pebble” is admirably accomplished by the casemaker — the bezel and lugs are virtually indistinguishable from the middle of the case, and 2) winding it is a sublime experience that you will enjoy.
Even though you posted these two watches together, they are really quite different.

I’m getting closer to making a decision but am not quite there yet. Will provide an update when I have decided. And then of course I will likely have to wait quite a while to receive the watch. But the anticipation is some of the fun.
Buy the square!
The numerals and dial are more beautiful than the round model. And even I with my dainty wrist felt comfortable with the 41mm square.

Interestingly, by my count opinions are now split 5-5 between the two watches. I guess that confirms that both watches are well appreciated by our community. I’ll do some more thinking and will let you know what I decide, and more important, why. Thanks for all the help.
