NEWS: Greubel Forsey's 'Mechanical Nano' enables up to 180 days autonomy in tiniest space!
Renowned watchmaking avantgarde laboratory Greubel Forsey have just announced significant progress with their concept of
Mechanical Nano, a new chapter of mechanical miniaturisation:

The Mechanical Nano concept is destined to deliver on the following objectives:
-
creating space – freeing up to 90% of the existing volume
-
providing energy – Freeing over 60 times more of the existing energy
– which for a 3 day movement mean a boost to up to 180 days of autonomy
- creating more efficient mechanisms – enhancing performance
with up to 3 times less components (prototype 2016)
-
renewing creativity – leading to unexplored complications,
for example the Indicateur de Fréquence (demonstration prototype 2014)
GF now have the second prototype ready, and it underwent already laboratory testing with encouraging results.

Core to the technology is that most of the geartrain, and particularly the
regulator, no longer rely on metal gears, balance wheels and ruby levers, but by using
air turbulence inside the movement. As a consequence,
100.000x less energy is needed compared to a conventional movement.
GF is currently working on the first timepiece using this breakthrough technology, which they are optimistic to have ready in short time.
I am really curious about this and really cannot wait to learn more. Completely new complications, watch designs etc will be possible through this - as I feel - game changer!
Best,
Magnus
