. . . I was a senior in 1978 at Bowling Green State University and a member of its NCAA 3rd place ice hockey team when I received a letter from Herb Brooks, the Team USA coach, to attend the Olympic tryouts in late 1978 or early 1979. I had already decided to bring my hockey career to a close and was heading off to law school in the fall of 1978, so I declined the invitation to attend the tryout camp. Unfortunately, I did not save the letter as it would have been a treasured keepsake after that team won gold at Lake Placid in 1980.
Two of my teammates, both from the state of Michigan, were on the gold medal team. Mark Wells (R.I.P.) was a forward and Ken Morrow, a defenseman. In fact, I'm not sure anyone in the history of hockey had a run like Morrow's: he went from the gold medal Olympic team straight to the NY Islanders and won four consecutive Stanley Cups. Not bad to have a gold medal and 4 rings in your home trophy case!
The closest I got to the team was attending one of the early round games in Lake Placid, a win over Bulgaria where former teammate Wells scored a goal. Very cool to see in person.
Anyway, hopefully I've not hijacked the thread but thought I should share my story.
Your gold Tonda GT Chrono is superb and I like your charcuterie board, too. It's very "Colorado"!
