SoI think that most of the ref 6394 bezels were smooth when they were made , and needed to be hand-carved Lunette Linge . I viewed that Italian forum, Orologi & Passioni. A reply there was consistent with my original idea, the case design for VC 6394 and PP 2551 exactly the same, only the shape of the case back is different. Until yesterday I carefully compared the pictures and realized that there was also subtle difference.

In the years I have been lucky enough to have a couple of Vacheron ref. 6394, one in yellow and one in white gold. Both of them had the very distinctive hachure croisée of the carrure (or Lunette Linge as suggeste by Tick Talk).
Now, in an Italian forum some think that there were variants with a smooth carrure. I think it is just the result of a damage followed by polishing of the case - but have found no original documents or catalogues to show a solution.
Any thoughts or proofs?

some ref 6394 without Lunette Linge bezel , I think the case been polished ,so lost its original texture.
Maybe we could compare the lugs of ref 6394, with Lunette Linge bezel piece to without Linge bezel piece.
If the bezel be polished, the lugs also should be polished.

The lugs do not have the Linge finish , are always polished. Those with bolished carrure, should however show some extra smoothening of the edges. For me (and may be wrong) all ref 6394 should be like this:

Indeed, there was a version with satine or satin-finish. Here is a catalogue image from 1966.
I share your concern with the smooth, mirror polished versions. Although I have never directly examined one, the few hi-res photos I've seen also show signs of over-polishing on the lugs and I suspect they have been refinished.
Edit: I had a peek at the discussion over at Orologi & Passioni and, aside from all of the wonderful vintage watches showcased, was reminded of the Patek models which shared this case design with V&C's 6394, although with a polished rather than textured finish. Ref 2551 was mentioned, and I can add that PP also used the same case for Ref 3433.
