Vintage V&C chronographs draw eager buyers like honey draws flies, so it comes as no surprise that fakes are often found on fleabay. Having common Valjoux movements as base calibers also makes the job easier for the hucksters. This one represented as a Ref 4072 is superficially close enough to warrant discussion.
The dial is cleverly weathered but radium numerals/hands weren't a legitimate feature. "GENEVE" missing its accent.
Take note of the incorrect lug shape. Aside from mimicking the Malte shape of the 4178 chronograph rather than the tapered lugs of the 4072, even at that they have the wrong profile. The crown with Maltese cross (shamrock?) incorrect for the period.
Fake case back markings, lacking a serial number
They even added VXN to dress up this pedestrian Val. 434. Aside from the standard industrial finish and incorrect placement of markings, the regulator and hairspring stud are quick indicators of a non-V&C movement. Also note of the jury-rigged retaining screws required to fit this movement to the case.
The seller has been advised and I hope they do their homework then remove the listing, however, it will likely reappear somewhere else so be safe out there!
