Was bowled over to receive the watch i have wanted for YEARS as a wedding present from my wife (will post when i can)... It's a Maxi Marine Chronometer, white face, steel bracelet (263-66) - for me, the most striking watch i have ever seen.

 

I set the time by the talking clock last night and this morning, it seems to be running aroun 32 seconds fast - this seems staggeringly inaccurate for a watch that costs a lot (relatively speaking) and has a chronometre certificate...

 

Is this usual and if not, what should i be doing about it?

Welcome to the forum and big congrats on your new time piece, no its not normal and i would suggest you take it back to your AD, it should be plus or minus 3-6 seconds a day  or there abouts, it could be magnetized which will need to be demagnetized  your AD will  sort it out for you, also please post some pics of your fantastic new piece, i wouldnt worry too much sounds minor

The UN dealer (Harrods in London) think this is normal for the first few weeks and after a month or so it will settle down to be well within its tolerances (seconds per day at worst). It this a total crock or would you concur with that?

about that  the standard for chronometer is +- 3-6sec a day approx how much are you gaining, also the UN mod is away on vacation marcus he would answer this for you but wait for the other mods and people here and see what they say too but 30sec over night does not seem right  just wait for other posts here, it could be magnetized which is minor

Will wait a couple of weeks and see if this stands true, if not, it'll be going back to be looked at

. . . either for the better or worse? A fresh movement normally takes a bit of time to 'set', and your dealer's recommendation might be well intentioned, but half a minute per day deviation is well beyond the normal range of acceptable performance . . . regards, Art
