I too actually like the 5170g quite a bit - it's very beautiful...

I still prefer the 5070G by a margin.

and it is a beautiful watch. However, it is clearly a doctor's watch. Very clinical and goes well with white coat - I mean it does not pop out from the wrist.

The dial is a bit busy but at the same time somehow flat.

I would rather have G than J. But would I sell my 5170J, put 20 k in between and buy 5170G... I doubt.

What I mean is that selling my 5170J on the 2nd hand market would mean that I have to put around 20k additional to get the G. It might be up to 30k...

However, I am sure that we will hear quite soon that the J is discontinued... I am not sure at all that the G version would be so much nice than the J version that a huge bunch of additional cash would be motivated.

In my books a chronograph like 5170 is a sporting watch. What we need is a steel case and a black dial.

I checked the price lists and the price difference between J an G was "normal". Are the prices "normal" anymore, is another question.

However that is an apples-to-apples comparison of the RETAIL prices of the two pieces.  What dr kol seems to be discussing above (and please correct me if I'm wrong) would be the spread between what he would have to pay if he bought a NEW 5170G by selling his CURRENT 5170J at prevailing prices in the secondary market for pre-owned pieces.  As such, he is bringing up questions like "why might a pre-owned 5170J be trading at such a discount versus retail" and "if the 5170J was discontinued, would secondary market prices begin to rise, as with previous discontinued models."

But - such discussions are most likely best left to other forums, and is probably not appropriate here!

The 5539 replaces the 5339, even when they look very different. Both are 37mm and have the cal. RTO 27 PS inside.
Both are typical watches from Patek Philippe, at its best.



Only the new one sings louder to me, much louder. Is there anything I would change? Probably not,
but as always it has to be seen on the wrist - my wrist



When it comes to the sound of the minute repeater I have not doubts,
because it comes from Patek Philippe and that means a lot in that case.

The 5980 was never a thought for me but this one: nice.

Perfect would a 5711 AR as understated.

5170 G: brilliant.

The  5200 G looks cheap, sorry.

The other alterations are all verry, verry pretty and the 5205 R with black dial in particular!

... because it doesn´t make that much fun to look at "press pictures" only. I tried to work
with them and to use them as a start, because I know most of us are not patient enough
until we get the "real thing" - me included.

I do like the slightly larger 5227 & the opening case back is a nice & surprising feature, though personally I do like the seamless shoulders of the 5127

I looking forward to seeing actual photos of the 5205R (lighter dial), 5960P (Black Dial)  & the 5170G, I very much prefer the Breguet dial over the original one.

And two that I can only dream about the 5539G & 5216P
