The Nautilus originally came with a bracelet, it is part of its look.

Seeing it on a strap is weird, and ut is visible, if you pay attention to the superior  part of the bracelet, close to the lugs.

The taste of Nautilus comes with the bracelet of it.

Personally, I prefer the the bracelet references in any of the metals.  The watch just feels better with the bracelet. The strap version feels a little uncomfortable with the case lug links and the folding buckle. Maybe it's my wrist but I have found the process of adjusting, fitting and feel of the bracelet version is better for me.

Visual appearance is personal preference and that is left to you.

... stainless variant. The nautilus, no matter what anyone says, is and will always be a sports watch, intended to be used and abused out on the ocean, among other tough environments. In my mind, it doesn't make much sense to create a tool watch such as the nautilus out of a metal that is as easily scratched and damaged as gold, not to mention that one cannot simply jump into the ocean with the r on, as it would ruin the leather. Just my two cents.

Anything other than the SS is just a variant of the original Nautilus watch that came out in 1976.

The Nautilus is supposed to be a sports watch and hence better off in steel to withstand the rigors of daily use.

On the other hand, there is the Calatrava or Gondolo model for those elegant moments requiring a fine dress watch in precious metal.

Its betterbwith the bracelet. Holds to the Truro nature of the watch. The 5726 is a great strap example. Also, gold on men is not as universal as it used to be so the steel,fliesnunder the radar more. I LOVE gold but yu cantnwear it everywhere and on all occasions. The steel version is really good on anymgiven Sunday. You have to go with what you like best.

and I am no exception.  The "original" Nautilus and a sport watch should be made of something durable like ss or carbon etc.  Very comfortable and well made bracelet.   Gold for dress watches.  Look at the secondary market pricing, it reflects the situation.

I know this question has been asked before but which you would buy 5712-1a or 5980-1a ? I'll be honest I currently have a 5980-1a which has been in Patek for almost 1 month for service. They are expecting to have the watch back in 4-5 months. I'm having a very hard time without it and want to get something in the meantime and If it turns out I like it more I will sell my 5980 when it returns. I'm not a patient person.

i have 5712 and I love it. for me this watch is associated with ss only. i just do not like it in gold.

Since you already have 5980 1A ss I suggest you go for a rose gold.
I agreed that nautilus is more a steel image but the rose gold 5712 on straps looks Awesome
You wouldn't go wrong with either ss or rg you will love the 240 cal. Good luck.
