5960 and 5980 are very different as many have already said. I would love to own both but the idea of vesting 2 Pateks of the same movement and similar function is bogging me. My resolution is to trade my 5960 for a 5980 and I can only tell which one wins over after I've had given both of them a fair wrist time.
I think at the end, you are going to own both...

I know it sounds hypocritical to recommend a watch I don't own but I do own the closest living relative, the 3712 which was my first Patek. My AD had just gotten a 3712 in stock and I was in the right place at the right time. He even sold it to me at 15% off retail.

The other Patek I own, I just got and I am totally in love with it, the 5205g. If you are willing to spend $40k+, that is the watch to have. Just my 2 cents.

I can see it is all from experience.

What I find painful with the moonphase is that you have to set it when you let the watch in the box for a while... 

2 must have apps for anyone with interest in watches are PuristPro (of course) and Watchville. The latter has a great time function for setting complications like moonphase, leapyear, etc.

In terms of 5712 vs 5980 I think it is impossible to choose as both are so great. I used to have the blue 5980 but let it go in order to get a 5712. I love the thin case on metal bracelet as it sits better on my wrist. I also found the 5980 too similar to the 5960 so that was my decision process. If I had a blank canvas and could only have one nice watch I would get the 5712 as it is the perfect compromise in being elegant and sporty at the same time. Lifestyle choices I would think. However if I had room for an additional nice dressier piece I would get the 5980... Can't go wrong one way or another!

Had the same dilemma and started with the 5712, only to flip it for the 5980. I enjoyed the presence of the larger and thicker watch, but missed the thin profile and comfort of the 5712.

Then along came the 5960, and I just had to add it to the staple. Completely different look, very versatile. It's my favorite behind the new 5905.

Take your time, and don't rush in making your decision. Most importantly, follow YOUR heart and what sings to you, not the opinion of others. Best of luck in your quest..

Well my first Patek was the 5980R-001. Beautiful! Between the 3 in question presented here I would choose again and again the same. But if going for steel, go for the 5712. I can argue that the Nautilus is a sports watch in name and form, but not in nature. The 5712 will take you to the beach - not in the water. The R will not even take you to the beach, unless it is on bracelet. And that is another story all together.

Sport chic but not for swimming. The steel 5980 I guess is supposed to go swimming.
Seen many here in the forum wearing the 5980 in the pool.

...and can say I enjoyed the 5712/1a much more. I love thick and bulky watches but the 5980 just looked and felt odd to me. The 5712 was elegant and casual at the same time. It can be worn with just about anything and felt like a complicated watch (considering it is a PP) worth more than it's price tag.

Why Does the original poster say that neither of the watches are a good buy? How could a Patek not be a good buy?

Personal choice i guess, I feel more comfortable wearing the 5980.
