Patek Philippe

Are these comparable chronographs. I realize one has an inhouse movement while the other has an F.Piguet 1185 derivative, but I would like to take the perspective that the origin of the movement does not count toward the comparison. All other factors apply. What are your thoughts on these 2 pieces?

for the same price as 1 Patek 5980 realy bothers me

These RO can be found at your AD easily with a nice discount whilt the 5980 can't. The 5980 will cost you 3 times the AP RO. I never really understood the price of the 5980. I like the watch and the brand but the Nautilus chrono is imo way overpriced. I would go for the RO, it is a very nice watch and it's a bargain. You could buy a black and a white one and still have some money left for another great watch

I remember that you really loved your AP Royal Oak Chronograph and that you were very happy with the watch when you acquired it and the fact it had an outsourced movement didn't bother you.

Overall, the Nautilus and the Royal Oak share a lot in common, both are from the 1970s (1972 I think) from the top watch manufactures at the time (the big three at the time were AP, VC, and Patek). Thus, both share a tremendous amount of history in their respective field. Both even share their design from ship portholes.

It ultimately depends if you love the 5980. The 5980 is expensive for what it is, but it's a relatively unique chronograph mechanism with a vertical clutch chronograph (the chronograph rides on the watch movement instead of sapping additional power for a separate chronograph movement). The movement is very interesting and unique. Overall, it's a great watch on paper.

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph movement is not as special as the Patek Philippe 5980's movement. But this workhorse movement is strong and reliable. I've heard it is even used in the Breguet Type XX Chronograph series. It's definitely a great movement, it's relatively thin when the Patek Philippe 5980 is fairly thick, and the AP RO Chrono is a great watch for daily wear.

Personally, I like the 5980 and I would acquire one. But the question is that do you love the Patek Philippe 5980 enough to justify it. It's fairly expensive for what it is; also at this price range, you're not far from an A. Lange & Sohne Datograph neither. There are more options to consider as the price increases.

To me, I like it more than the Audemars Piguet, but there is another Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch that I like that is in this price range... I wonder which one would I take. The Survivor is another cool watch to own.

Wow, I didn't know that Gerald Genta was a part of the watch design.

In fact the 5960 and 5980 are not the only chronographs with vertical clutch. There are Frederic Piguet chronograph calibres with vertical clutch too. It has been the case for long, well before PP issued its auto chrono calibre. I don't know if all FP calibres have vertical clutch. I don't know if the FP calibres in RO watches have vertical clutch or not, but they could possibly.

The automatic JLC chrono calibre has vertical clutch too.

The Breguet Type XX doesn't have a FP calibre. It is equipped with a Lemania calibre.

I can add that now that I've tried the 5980 on my own wrist I love it. I was really not appealed before, but like the 5712, until you've not tried it you can't imagine....

I'm still personally having a hard time deciding which one I like more; the 5712 or the 5711. I love the simplicity of the 5711, it reminds me of a simple Royal Oak. But I love the movement of the 5712 and although I don't love the dial layout of the 5712, I still overall find it somehow satisfying.

but as Bruno said its not worth 3 times more than the ROO. I actually do like the Nautilus but I can't seem to get them to fit my wrist correctly so I would take the ROO for sure.

Give me your wrist! I'll make it fit! With the exception of the fitment problem, do you have any other reservations about the 5980?

I think the 5980 is a great watch. I really like it. I am actually really starting to really like the Chronograph line.

I still remember about six to eight years ago; I was shocked with Patek Philippe; a steel Nautilus watch with no complication cost in the low five figure range... I thought the price was rather ambitious for a steel watch. Today, I don't think it's overly ambitious. So much has changed in just a few years.

I happen to like the watch a lot. To be honest its no just the Nautilus that I have bracelet problems with but almost all bracelets that don't have some sort of micro adjustment. I like to wear my watch very snug but not super tight. I've tried the PP link and a half and it does not do the trick. I'll cross my fingers for a rubber strap option for the 5980 and 5712. Unfortunately I might be waiting for a long time

Cal 3126, which is based on the excellent cal 3120 is increasingly found in the later models> For example, the Navy, Safari, Volcano produced after around 2008 are equipped with cal 3126. I dislike the 5980 because it looks too thick for the Nautilus case, which was always quite thin.
