Hi,
Let us dream, a ref 2499 for 1700 US dollars!
Any idea of the size of the house you could buy on Park Avenue for that money at that time?

Unfortunately Patek Philippe watches have never been affordable for the "simple" man on the street, and as the middle class has enriched and the upper class has largely grown since that time, I'm pretty sure the probability to be in position of affording such complicated pieces by Patek Philippe has tremendously increased!!
So no regret, specially considering that our primary needs and even secondary needs are much better fullfilled now than 50 years ago (I mean for the majority of people).
Then about the most interesting aspect of your question, I'm also preferring a vintage split seconds chronograph to a perpetual calnedar chronograph! And the 5959 is indeed my favorite in the current Patek Philippe collection, even above a 3939 or a 5016 or 5207!
That's not a question of value, but of fineness, uniqueness, delicacy in the art of watchmaking!
The 5959 is an absolute best for me, only competing in my heart with a JLC Gyrotourbillon (1 or 2 alike)!
Cheers
Dje
