Cool looking and refined ( slightly funky ) case. Superb dial. Nice looking movement.

I remember very well this ref, the first rectangular movement in a very long time for PP. Apparently a 215PS was used as a base. It is a pity they have not used this movement more in the following years... Would be interesting to understand why
As far as I can remember it was costing around 20/25K€ new at the time. Pretty much similar if not slightly higher than an entry level Calatrava
That said, I'm not convinced it was production cost that put the brakes on.
After all, PP did follow up with several shaped casings of this movement under the "Gondolo" label, and many were at "entry level" pricing for PP. I more suspect that PP's market segment just wasn't going for shaped cases at the time. And those looking for a lower price point could get plenty from Cartier or JLC. Likely the same reason behind the fate of my beloved ALS Cabaret.

I've seen it around at anywhere from $18,000 (about what I paid) - $24,000 US for the rose gold pre-owned.
Not too keen on the shape, but impressive to see the movement's shape matching the case's. Some would have taken a round one and hidden it! Best, E.
A bargain PP
And that applies to multiple generations of the Gondolo in my humble opinion, very competitive and compelling considering what's on offer, especially with a see through caseback.

These square and tonneau PP can be gotten pretty well out there, and they do wonderful things in these shapes.

My favorite Patek design ever, bar none.
I wear mine often. The guilloché work bears close inspection, and I actually prefer the added contrast of the 5098R's rose gold aesthetics to the platinum. PP has done some subsequent designs around this shaped movement, but none to my eye capture the grace and charm of this reference.
Does anyone have photos of the platinum version or of the other hand-wound Gondolos with the 25-21 REC caliber?
Incidentally, was the 1920s ('30s?) original perhaps the inspiration behind Frank Muller's early output? I remember reading somewhere that Muller spent time at PP restoring vintage timepieces.
