Patek Philippe

I don’t agree on this comment

“My cash add over the cost of my Royal Oak would basically be like paying MSRP (30k) for the Nautilus,”

The add over is actually the difference or margin you made from the RO
If you paid 20k and sold for 26k then then the 6k is the add over
So it’s like you paid 52 or 50 not 30k my friend
As your initial capital the 20k is still that a capital

Funny how everyone suddenly needs a 5711 now that everyone else does!

Sorry to be blunt, but yes the 5711 ha always been somewhat hard to find, but at this point i think many of the buyers just want it because nobody else has it, or they want to flip it. Perhaps you’ve always loved it, but I’ve met so many people who desperately want one but can’t really articulate why, so I’m suspicious of anyone that is willing to buy one in this market. It just reminds me of the people willing to line up all day and pay $300 for a Supreme T-shirt or $1k for the latest ‘yeezy’ sneakers. Obviously it’s nobody else’s business why they may want a particular watch, so each to their own, but $60k for a 5711 is absolutely insane.

You should do it

You’ve made some money on the RO (through appreciation after you bought it), and the 5711 should hold its value given very limited supply barring a major financial crisis (in which case the value of the RO would fall too). Personally, I like the RO better, but given your strong preference for the 5711 why not go for it.

The RO looks great on your wrist and looks great period, full stop.  If the 15400 fit me as well as it fits you, I would much rather wear it than a 5711; it's a better-looking watch and has at least an equal pedigree.  The RO also is very unlikely to depreciate in value at this point.  In contrast, the 5711's current price is almost certainly inflated -- more than twice as much for a model essentially equivalent to this one? -- and is thus subject to correction over the next few years.  Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Why would 5711 be any different than the RO?

Similar pedigree, similar segment. If anything it’s the RO that will fall more than the Nautilus, AP brand power is not that of PP.

just my view, but

The 5711 is the subject of an unprecedented bubble, whereas its close peer, the RO, is not. Ten years ago, the valuations were much closer, and for a reason; they're comparable watches. That said, I obviously might be wrong about future valuations. Just to be clear, though, I'm not remotely biased in favor of the the AP brand over Patek. I own a Patek and not an AP, and in fact I sold my only AP -- a ROC -- a year ago because I had grown tired of it.

So, it's all about how much they are worth and how desirable they are?

Rather than buying the watch that makes you happy? I can't afford either but I'd pick the AP over the PP in a heartbeat.

Obviously you should always buy the watch that makes you happy, BUT

not at the very top of the market. No harm in waiting for the bubble to burst.

If you are gonna spend that amount of money I would recommend go for a classy Patek 5711 is amazing but a royal oak is so so so similar and yet so much cheaper
