How will this iteration of the 5980 go down in Horological History Books? I’m assuming it is a much less produced watch than the blue dialed version.
Small search on Chrono24:
31 blue dialed for sale (of wich one Black Venom 😭)
6 white dialed for sale
The blue dials have the highest asking price. Although the white versions are not far behind. Now the monetary value of these steel Chronograph Nauti have been on the rise steeply the last few years but I wonder why the white dials aren’t appreciated more than the blue dials?
1. Much rarer (!!)
2. More sporty (suits a chronograph better)
Now don’t get me wrong; the blue dial obviously is the ‘original’ color of the Nautilus. But there are quite some collectors who would state that there is no business for a chronograph in the Nautilus design (personally I feel that is rubbish, but I’m somewhat biased...). So why the greater demand for the blue dial chronograph? The white dial sets it more apart against its thinner nephews and radiates a more sporty feel. Besides that the 5980 is more of a summer watch anyway so a white dial makes it even more perfect.
I love that Patek blue/grey color even more than the white (silver actually). But when concerning the chronograph the white dial suits the complication better. The blue dials fit the 5711 and 5712 much better. A white dial in a 5711? It makes it more of a girls watch to me (nothing wrong with that). So to me a 5711 should come in blue apparel.
Oh and why hasn’t there been a white dialed 5712? I think that could be a very cool version. To weird? Patek? Small LE batch?
