I quickly saw it on the So Cal roads during my trip, and I didn't expect that from Subaru.

A sensual small coupé, with the famous 4 Cylinders Boxer, which delivers 260 HPs.

Small, yes, the engine is, but its melody is as captivating as its consumption is frightening.

Very well balanced, much better than the already miata.

Although the chasis could certainly cope with more more and a turbo !

U mentioned 260ps , the ones in Asia are rated at 200ps ......... Hmmm

Do u know if the ones u saw were 2.0L boxer FA20 engine blocks ? Subaru does have the EJ20 and EJ25, the former being the bigger blocks.

Although the EJ20 blocks being close decks, and are able to pump out more power, when further tweaked, and the FA20 being a direct descent of that fabulous flat four.

Gosh ! I need to keep up to date with the new car releases !

factory, they are really lovely. Actually, there is also a Toyota version, exactly the same as the car was developed by both Toyota and Subaru. When they first went on sale here in Australia it was via the net and a friend of mine told me the entire quota of both Toyota and Subaru for OZ was sold in few hours!

... both the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 appeared on our roads. I see a few more of the Toyotas at the moment, and actually prefer the front end design of the 86 with the more open grill and vertical driving lights. But it just seems weird to me to have such obvious Subaru engineering 'trademarks', such as the 2L boxer engine, in a Toyota. I'd be driving the BRZ for that reason. But I can understand why Toyota needs a successful 'sports' car again. They have not really filled that niche for a few years.

Nicolas, you told me about the Subaru coupé you saw in the US and i had no clue what car it could be !!!!

In the mid nineties i drove this break-version of the standard Subaru Impreza , no need to tell you that we had the power from 211 upped a bit to over 250 hp .. easy done on a blown car.

Now why a comparison with my Clio RS ?

And I will definitely try it. I as always captivated by the engine of the Impreza, less by the lines of its body.

Now, things have changed...

All I read about it, both the Toyota and the Subaru, are positive things.  Let's wait for the STI.

 

Been about to buy an Impreza STI a couple of times. Some friends have it (highly modified, about 350hp) and they run like god. The way the boxer engines pushes and sounds is really addictive.

... In an Impreza with my window slightly open, fantastic noise ... but then my friend passed me in his normally aspirated 3.5 V8 Ferrari 355 revving up to 8000 and all you could hear was the fantastic scream of that V8

Come on!, we can not compare, and those "small" V8s, including the Modena, scream like hell, up there in the rev counter. The 430 started to sound different, lower tone, I guess due to the larger displacement.

 

The Subaru boxer engine has a special sound, totally different from anything else, and I love it. Low tones mixed with the sexy blow of the wastegate, yes!

 

I do not discard buying an STI in te future, who knows?

With a bit more powerful engine, it could well be THE car to get, for the fun and the pleasure.

from information i have read about them they were specifically designed for the younger driver who wants a sleek looking coupe, but doesnt want a hugely powerful engine.
everything i have read about them is great. the boxer engine gives it a low centre of gravity so the handling is good, rear wheel drive makes it a proper car which can take more power unlike most front wheel drive cars.

they are priced well to make them available to their target market so i expect to see lots of the GT86's in the UK. whether the BRZ will sell as well i dont know. it would be the one i would buy as i have a soft spot for Subarus and their normally aspirated boxer engines. as i own one i know what they are like.

i'm not surprised that there are rumours of an STi which is a subaru trademark. the chassis can easily cope with more power. you never know, they may even bring out a turbo in the future.

whether Toyota follow Subaru with more powerful models remains to be seen. i am doubtful as they will prefer mass sales of standard models rather than lower sales of special models.

this is all for the future, but currently the models available are great cars.

Its a shame you dont like 4 door saloons as you would love my 3 litre 6 pot boxer which now puts out 270bhp.
It may be a tiptronic auto, but it is bloody fast and handles really well due to the Bilstein suspension as mr Bim will testify.

You also will have to consider your family. As your angel gets older you will need more space in the back so you may need 4 doors one day.
We call that 'getting old' :)
