. . . was the Academy's slight of Peter O'Toole for Best Actor in Lawrence. And, for that matter, Anthony Quinn . . .
. . . deserved to be co-winner with Sharif. In a film with the arguably greatest cast of all time, Quinn's performance stood out. Alec Guinness, O'Toole, Jack Hawkins, Claude Rains, Jose Ferrer . . . Quinn outshone them all.

Many, many years ago, I was very moved by The Day I Met Caruso , a 1956 short movie (26 min.) by Frank Borzage, episode 34 of the Screen Directors Playhouse .
It tells the story of a tenâyearâold Quaker girl named Elizabeth, who travels alone by train in 1917 from Boston to New-York and unexpectedly meets the famous tenor Enrico Caruso.
Initially shocked by his flamboyance, she reproaches him for his extravagant lifestyle â his fur coat, his affectionate manner with admirers, and his apparent disregard for Quaker modesty.
However, she gradually warms to him as he sings, tells stories, and treats her with kindness. Their brief encounter opens her imagination and softens the strict moral rigidity she has been raised with. When she reaches New York, she feels changedâless fearful, more open to joyâand remembers the meeting as a turning point in her childhood.
Lotfi Mansouri as Caruso & Sandy Descher as Elizabeth are wonderful.

. . . which I first saw in high school. No more compelling vision of life, death, and time ever committed to celluloid in my humble opinion. The pocket watch was a powerful allegory.

It was produced in France in the early '60s . . .
. . . with a French cast and broadcast in America on The Twilight Zone. I just searched thru YouTube but can't find a complete version of the ~ twenty minute episode; perhaps it's available at a nominal cost.

I like the three films and Shane is my big favorite. A classic Western with a great work of Alan Ladd as the main character who gives name to the film and a little boy playing Joey ...
