Watch of the Week

 By: Echi : July 18th, 2021-11:40
Wristcan

This was a theme with a lot of unexpected cool entries. When I got a message from Mike about judging for ana digi, I confidently responded in the affirmative thinking it would be a cake walk. I mean, c’mon, how many folks are going to really participate in such a theme? It wasn’t exactly “show me your best dive watch”. It’s relatively niche if one goes by what people post here on a daily basis. Turns out I was wrong and quite glad that I was because I got to see a concentration of pieces on a theme that has piqued my interest in the past year or so.

So apart from coming up with best watch of the week and just posting runners up based on feel, I thought why not rank them based on my favorite pieces and pick winners from there.

The watch of the week will be a wildcard for sure. The first runner up will come from quartz entries. If ever I decide to get an ana digi, it will most probably be quartz. The second runner up will be, of course, non quartz. Jump hours and such have always fascinated me so I got a big kick out of seeing entries in this category.

Here goes..

The second runner up was a tough one and while I was mesmerized by the Zeitwerk pics of Brandon and MJ23, I had to go Genta. The Genta pics coming from NT931, Brauner and Watchonthewrist made choosing very difficult but in the end, I had to go with Timeout’s entry. The Bulgari Octo Bi Retro literally jumped out at me visually and the side case image was what tilted it in favor of Timeout smile

2nd runner : Timeout’s Bi Retro

Choosing first runner up was an even more difficult to one as all the brands except for one was ably represented.. Breitling, Omega, Citizen and Casio. I was kinda hoping I’d see a Seiko in there somewhere but did not sadly. Now, again, I really had a hard time. KMII’s Breitling pic on what seemed like a Rimowa background resonated with me as it represented travel! However, I had to go with a tie here between Eklektik and NT931 and here’s why.. Among the quartz pieces that I might considering getting, his Ti Breitling aerospace is at the top of my list. As for NT931’s colorful Casio, well, that just put a smile on my face right away when I saw his pic.

First runner up tie : Eklektik’s Breitling Aerospace

First runner up tie : Nt931’s colorful Casioak

As for watch of the week, well, it had to go to an outlier in that the watch itself is not my type but the wear and tear on it just got me. Mary Anny mentioned that the watch had stories to tell and the photography on that eco-drive with orange hands (2nd pic) made me go back to it repeatedly. Even without MA’s write up, the pic would have made me wonder about its life regardless smile

So there you go folks. I had a hard time choosing and that could only mean you guys have great pieces with matching great pics. I’d like to thank Mike and all the contributors for making this a fun theme!

WOTW : Mary Anny’s Citizen

Thank you for choosing these award winners, and I am happy so many came to see what was happening here

Static Watch of the Week

 By: eklektik : July 18th, 2021-12:36
Dear all, What a great theme and in consequence, what a nice turn-up! These watches are not often considered but all the posters here seem to have them close to their heart for their own very personal reasons. Thanks to all who participated. Having to make a choice was not easy, but after some time thinking about it, I saw in them a clear theme: celebration!

From that theme, here are my choices.

The second runner-up is Mary_Anny, celebrating the sea and its exploration. I really like the photo of this old beaten watch, which surely comes with plenty of memories and stories.

The first runner-up is a celebration of space, exploration, adventure and dreams. For this one I chose the nice photo from Subexplorer. This model is worn daily by some of the astronauts residing currently on the ISS. One of them being a fellow French man, Thomas Pesquet, who makes his country and fellow countrymen very proud.

And finally, the most difficult choice, the Static watch of the week. This one celebrates joy, happiness, holidays and hope. All those good things we need so much in the current global climate. It had to be the very special Casio from NT931.

Congratulations on the model and the great shot! Thanks again for your contributions! Best, Eklektik

I was astonished by that Casio, amused by subexplorer's astronaut display, and regarding the colorful G-Shock I am wondering how many folks at this site have one (or have ordered one since seeing this!).

Congratulations to the winners.

Cazalea

Great veredict Eklektik! Big congrats to NT 931 and to all special mentioned winners as well. Thank you for including my shot among the mentions. Have a nice week ahead friends! Abel

OK, we have the WRIST part of WRISTSCAN judging ready

The Breitling Aerospace came in third place. It is a legend in the tool watch category and a breakthrough for Breitling that shaped the brand. This watch was introduced to the market when professionals depended on it to perform their duties. There are multiple pictures of this watch - clearly this group adores this watch.

We have a 3-way tie for 3rd place. KMII and Cazalea and the Black one I really liked

(Note from Cazalea - which was not on a wrist).

(I have to plead conflict of interest for including this photo because I am writing up the results for alafeh, Cazalea)

Favorite but not on a wrist -- raise your hands please, all you who have judged WristScan and picked a winner NOT in your category

(Note from Cazalea - I think I have done it 3 times myself).

My second choice would be the Gerald Genta jumping hour watch, the uniqueness of that watch and its mix of daring style and classic elements make for a very interesting piece that would add value and character in any collection. Amazingly we had two different dial layouts to chose from, but only one on a wrist.

Non-wrist Genta

Wrist Genta of NT31

mj23’s Zeitwerk was my first choice, mainly due to the horological firepower behind the hood and the exceptional finishing and unique design as well. Congratulations!

Cazalea for Afaleh

(Please forgive me for all the notations!)

Congratulations to MJ and ..,

It was a tough category to judge this week. Our own host made a very cool choice with this shot.
Well played Mike.

Well played.

Thank you -- I love this anonymous painting and the fish were all looking at me and my watch, so ...

 By: cazalea : July 19th, 2021-01:00
It was on the wall at my wife's school abaout 20 years ago - some kids drew grafitti on it (above her left hand) and tore it down.  She rescued it and brought it home.

I couldn't find anyone to fix it for me "We can't touch another person's artwork" so I repaired the corner with similar paper stock, bought some paint and boldly went at it myself.

Thank goodness you saved it ...

Maybe next time I'll choose "Show us your dive watches THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN IN THE WATER" or something easy like that.  smile

Cheers,

Cazalea

Thank you dear Mike for your hosting and challenging…
