White gold version; i am a fan of PR indicators and manual winds... however I really like the big date and moonphase complications of Lange (don’t own any big date or moonphase watches).... my grail would be dataogtaph up/down.... but that will be awhile...thoughts?

I think either watch would ultimately complement the Datograph well. I happen to prefer the 1815 up/down to the Saxonia as a dress watch (I own the rose gold version and wear it regularly), but it’s a very personal decision, and they are both great watches. If you think you might later end up getting the 1815 chronograph rather than a Datograph (I actually prefer the dimensions of the 1815 chronograph, but obviously you lose the big date), I would probably get the Saxonia, because the 1815 up/down has a fairly similar aesthetic to the 1815 chronograph. But as I say, they are both wonderful watches. 

Id probably go with the Saxonia. Really tough choice you have there..

Between these two however I'd go for the Saxonia Mondphase. If I would take an 1815 in this price category (€ 20.000 - € 30.000)  I'd go for the 1815 time only. This breathes A. Lange & Söhne from every pore, so to speak, without the dial cluttering two subdials. An 1815 Chronograpph is of course another ballgame, another league wikth another pricetag. 

It takes more than 150 turns of the crown to fully wind the watch. I found this our the hard way and sold my up and down after a month of ownership.  The watch kept remarkably accurate time compared to all my previous Lange watches.

Mine doesn’t require nearly that many turns to fully wind. That doesn’t sound normal. I find it to be a beautiful winding function - the perfect click, in my opinion. I actually prefer the winding over my PP and VC manual winds.

because I purposely tried winding another Up and Down on display at a shop and I still had the same problem,  Oh well, I am glad yours has been great!

The Saxonia Moonphase is fantastic, but I thought the dimensions of 40mm made it wear a bit too large for a dress watch.

... upon your buying preferences and other factors. If you bought an 1815 U/D or Saxonia MP first, are you planning to sell it to be able to buy the Dato U/D? Or would you keep both watches (the first purchase plus the Dato U/D)? How long would you have to wait to get the Dato Up/Down right now, if you didn't buy another watch first? When considering the purchase of any of these watches, would you buy preowned or only brand new?

More background: I would most likely buy preowned, I don’t own any watches smaller than 42mm, I feel one day that I will buy an 1815 Chrono at the very least. In that sense, I think the Saxonia complements the 1815 chrono better? Which watch can be dressed down easier?

Either of these watches would clearly be my most dressy watch and my first precious metal watch. I was originally looking at a rose gold black dial combination. So beautiful! I assume that combo is more dressy?

The Zeitwerk is also a model of lust. These Langes are just amazing! Only issue is they are not necessarily in my “normal” range of buying watches 😂. I am typically a “value/bang for buck” collector, but I do realize that this hobby is more emotional and I am not trying to collect something for investment but to wear it.

Both watches are on the pretty dressy side - each is <10mm thick and has a conservative dial. I find my rose gold 1815 up down difficult to dress down, so I mostly wear it to work (with a suit). But the white gold should be less dressy and make the watch more versatile. The Saxonia is slightly larger (both diameter and thickness), which I think makes it less dressy, as does the presence of the big date. And if you want white gold, I personally find the Saxonia moon phase a bit more visually interesting. But both watches are wonderful. 

1815, Datograph, Saxonia ... next you'll need a Lange !
It's great that you'll likely buy preowned. That's the only way to go since "value/bank for buck" is important to you. I think any Lange can be worn informally, but you're right that RG/black dial is probably the dressiest combo (or at least dressier than a WG or PT watch).
Since you'll buy preowned, that really opens up your range of possibilities beyond those that are currently offered by Lange. You may prefer one of the older 1815 chrono models, 1815 Up/Downs or the original Datograph to the current offerings. Maybe you've already looked at those earlier models, but if not, then they're worth checking out. I'd spend a bit more time looking at photos of various models online and also reading about them. You may find that a clear favorite begins to emerge. And once you've accepted that you'll likely get more than one Lange, you may find that the decision about which is first becomes much less important. I'd focus on getting one for a really fair price (and presumably preowned prices won't be going up anytime soon).

I finally chose the 1815 up down in white gold. In fact I wasnt at all thinking about the saxonia moonphase but the AD proposed it to me. It was the rose gold version with black dial which looks absolutely mesmerizing on pictures. In all honesty it didnt look that good in reality! I must say there was a huge difference between pics and in the flesh. I didnt hesitate a second and turned it down. Of course it s a matter of taste and i apologize in advance for those who own it or like it. Tastes cannot be discused as they say. For the info and if it helps you im absolutely delighted with my 1815 white gold up and down. Sometimes I wonder if I should have chosen the rose gold but both ate equally fantastic.
