I was in Las Vegas last week for a conference. I'm not much for gambling so I spent my free time walking through the shops. There are amazing watch stores in Vegas and I enjoyed checking out the different watches and the watch talk with the different salespeople. I was back at my hotel and walked into the watch store at the shops attached to the hotel. I told the salesperson that I would try not to drool on the glass as I moved from counter to counter. The IWC Aquatimer...cool. F.P. Journe...very nice.
Please believe me when I tell you that I tried to quickly walk past the Breguet display. The Breguet dials and classic look appeal to me on many levels and I would have preferred to not torture myself. Well... I hesitated and let out a little sigh as I peered down at the beautiful display. "you like the Breguets" the salesperson announced loudly as if he could read my mind. I went on to tell him how I was drawn to the beauty of the dials and the history of the brand.
My eyes were instantly drawn to 5930ba classique. Love the classic, understated look. The salesperson was a huge fan and went on to tell me the stories of the brand that I had heard many times before. I didn't care...tell me again. I love it. I told him that I was drawn to the 5930 and how, as an "entry level" Breguet it was just out of reach for my budget but not unthinkable that I would own one myself one day. "Lets try it on" he said. I told him that I did not want to waste his time, that I was still in trouble for the 69 Speedy & Panerai that I purchased last year etc... He told me that the store was slow and it would not waste his time at all.
I put that watch on my wrist with my grey herringbone suit and let the watch just peek out from behind my sleeve. OMG. I wish there was a word that could describe the feeling I had looking at that watch on my wrist. Love, lust, desire, frustration not being able to say "I'll take it", excitement of trying it on...what a mix of emotions.
I had told the salesperson that I was in sales during our initial small talk and as he was putting the watch back in the case he said something very inspiring to me; "the next time you are hesitating on making a call or approaching a prospect, think of this watch. It will be here waiting for you"
He gave me the Breguet catalog on my way out and I told him how much I appreciated him taking the time to show me the watches.
This week has been one of my most productive weeks in months! I've been calling on accounts that I've been putting off for months, following up on clients, creating a new marketing plan. My staff at the office is wondering what has gotten into me!
I can't get the vision of that watch on my wrist out of my mind.
Sorry for the long story!
Respectfully,
Wade

Nice salesperson too You described and nothing's more beautiful than a dream
I saw my "dreamwatch" in an ad when I was a young student,so You might imagine how long I had to wait till I was in the position to afford it.
Unfortunately after the purchase of the desired watch 15 years later, it marked the beginning of this strange kind of the addiction many people here are suffering of and I had to undergo a withdrawal and get some kind of distance to the lures of watch addiction
But it's a nice pastime anyway. And the classic Breguets are certainly watches one can fall in love with and the brand-history is unique.
Thanks for this lovely story.
kind regards,
lutz
Great story, Wade.
“Love, lust, desire, frustration …”
Many of us have been in this position and can appreciate your swirling emotions. The Ref. 5930 is a lovely dress watch and Breguet’s yellow gold case goes wonderfully with the silvered dial and black strap; perfect under a cuff and suit. I am certain you will get there, and this might just be the motivation you need, by the sounds of things.
And the eternal question: why do we continue to torture ourselves? I am not certain of the answer but feel free to drop into Purists any time for a bit more pain!
Andrew
What a wonderful story! Thanks so much for sharing it with us! I really hope that Breguet graces your wrist one of these days.
That will most certainly be another great story to share with us all here! Good luck! I'm wishing you a monumental year in sales!
Cheers,
Daos
I'd like to share as well a similar story, I'll make it short because on many aspects I think it's very close to what you told us here already.
