Speedmaster Mark II - Past and present

Team,

Other day, a dear friend and I did a stop over at the local Omega Boutique.

It was fortunate that he was wearing an "mint" all original Mark II. The fantastic Boutique staff notice that and we decided to compare it with the modern, Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Mark II.

Here is the comparison.

Movement and overall impression

The original Mark II is powered by the traditional hand wound caliber 861. A tried and true workhorse.

The new Mark II uses a modern CoAxial movement, the Omega 3330 with a Si14 Silicon balance spring. This movement is COSC certified.

My overall impression is that the old Mark II was conceived as pure "tool watch" and the new one carries a much more luxurious style and this reflects on an impeccable finish.

The vintage lovers can be angry with me but I prefer the new one at any time.

Side by side

I put the two watches close and took some pics in order to compare.

Final considerations

The new Mark II is a big and bold watch but "dresses" fine even on my skinny wrist.

My single complain about the new MK II is that Omega could leave it without the date. This should make this beautiful watch closer to the original and avoid Amanico's standard issue.

A very warm "thank you" to the Boutique staff that, as usual, was very knowledgeable and helpful. The espresso also was very good.

Cheers,

Nilo
