"Art" - for Art's sake...

It was the end of the search for an answer to the challenge posed by ‘da Judge’ - what do you do with the change if you trade down to a Hemi Challenger SRT8 ? (Sorry, dear reader; it’s a weak in-joke, but hopefully your indulgence will be rewarded).

The search ended in a tray on the display cabinet of an Omega dealership where a remarkably patient and kind store manager suggested he might have the answer in his safe. He certainly did: a thing of contradictory beauty. Common nobility. Complicated simplicity. Plain elegance.:

“Care to try it on?”, he asked. Are you kidding - is the sea wet???  The next ten minutes were spent holding it up, holding it down, holding it in the light, holding it near, holding it far and holding it in the highest esteem.

Here was a man, though, who knew how to parlay reverence into religious ecstasy. “If you like that one, then you might like this one”:

The man was a master of understatement; that openworked face is stunning. It’s difficult to tell the time given that the painted hands on the ‘mystere’ disc merge somewhat into the plates, but it is so mesmerising that telling the time becomes a distracting afterthought.

The sheer quality of workmanship in these watches (regrettably not captured in the poor quality snaps) gives life to the concept of timepieces as art :

Thanks for sowing the seed Art. Now, where's the nearest Dodge dealer?

Cheers,

pplater.
