I have to admit, I love the Panerai historical watches and think they are the best at re-inventing their history. And I think they should keep doing that. But I also applaud Panerai for developing their own movements and new complications. Although I would not be interested in a tourbillon from Panerai or anyone.
Like Ferrari, a company that has some great similarities with Panerai, I think it's just fine to look to the past and keep the Panerai DNA going. But I also think it is smart to look towards the future while keeping that same DNA. A lot of people don't like change and they don't like their favorite brands to change but it has to happen to some extent. Even the Morgan has new engines and other new materials, even though they still look like the old design they've always had.
I believe the perfect example of where Panerai is heading is the PAM 233. It has the 1950 case and sandwich dial, but has a new Panerai in-house movement with GMT and an 8 day reserve. The 8 day reserve is something Panerai used about 40 years ago or so. So it's still a nod to their roots while looking ahead.
I welcome what they have in store.
That's my two-cents.
