I thought it was originally produced with plexi and since a few years now with sapphire. I want sapphire and would like someone to let me know if I am right. I will pill the trigger if it comes with sapphire. Thanks again, Alex
Yes my friend. If it is with sapphire, I am having it.
I also consider to take it as a bundle with the 372 or with the 422. I hope the 557 and the 372 come with the same sapphire as the 422, which is very nice. Hope someone can confirm. All the best my friend, Alex
The recent model of the 372...
has sapphire crystal glass. The 557 is still produced with plexiglass.
I can't remember if....
they switched to sapphire crystal after 2 or 3 years of production..BUT..the fact that the recent models use it, it's 100% correct I tried to get some info, as to whether the 557 might have followed the same faith but I couldn't find anything on the offic...
This becomes a mysterious thriller...online there seem to be watches that claim sapphire. The official retailer tries to figure out.
The community is not 100% sure I feel. How to clarify this mystery? Hmmm

I called today Panerai (factory) and they could not tell. What I learnt is that the watch is about to be discontinued (it is not being produced since some time in effect). They will inform me next week about the definitive status if the crystal, but I am ...

Yeah, there seems no perfect solution now, as the 557 falsely appeared to be: - 372, perfect in all respects, but it is not a destro, and me being leftie was sold to the idea of getting a destro - 217, can’t be had new and much prefer the current movement...
