Ciao Ryan!
1st of all a very big welcome to the Purists! We are glad that you'v found us, and especially the 1st post is right here on the Panerai forum, well the only warning i have for you is that from now on it's just going to be ALL downhill for you, there is no turning back from the dreaded but highly admired Panerai virus!
Now, on to your concern. The inspectors of your watch told you the half-truth, in that it is true that the creaking noise you hear when you screw the crown back in place is normal. "Normal" here though, refers to the fact that it will not interfere with the daily workings of the movement of the watch, meaning that this has absolutely nothing to do with it affecting the accuracy of your watch, or anything else that will potentially harm your precious 292 in a heavy way. In that you can take a breather.
BUT, the question here is whether or not you personally ARE bothered with the noise. I knew i wasnt, and in fact this exact same problem occured with 2 of my Panerai watches before, both my 249 and my 349. The cause behind the noise is this ( let me try to best explain it as i can in simple terms ok?). The screw down crown has several components behind it, that are all hidder within the "tower" that has the threads on it where the crown screws down. One of them being a tiny spring, that is used to "pop-out" the crown when you have fully un-wound it. ( You can feel this when you release the crown, and can also feel the effect of it when you have to push the crown back in place, if you don't push it too far all the way until you hear the "click" , the crown comes right back at you, doesnt it? This is the effect of this very tiny spring)
Now, sometimes, due to certain misplacement or alignment whatsoever that probably took place during assembly of the watch, the spring is placed in such a manner that it is too close to a plate ( or so i think and if i understood it correctly from what was told to me via the watchmaker here) that it scrapes against the plate, especially when you are screwing the crown back in place. It is this friction that is causing the noise you hear.
The way to solve this is, at least in the manner here in Tokyo, is that the watchmaker puts some oil on the affected region, and voila! Virtually silent screwing down.
This is a process that , in the hands of a qualified Panerai watchmaker and if he is willing to do it for you, be solved in less than 30mins. It does NOT take 3 days, and this just goes to show the incompetence of the watchmaker at your AD ( sad to say, but i wonder if he is even trained by Panerai/ Groupe Richemont) . Or maybe it's just that i'm lucky enough to live in a city that has a Panerai boutique that has a resident super watchmaker at the store. Just like how the New York Lange guys have got Alkis, their SUPER Lange watchmaker. But it's slightly different here for Panerai, because in our case this guy works IN the boutique itself, you can even see his workshop behind the frosted glass.
So, the only advice i have for you is either to tell them how to solve it, and get them to do it for you, or live with the noise, knowing that it doesnt actually harm your watch, or if you happen to find yourself heading towards Tokyo soon, give me a head's up, and i'll take you to the boutique and get it solved right there and then for you.
I sincerely hope that this helps, and btw, congratulations on getting a 292! Does this have the miale on it or is it the later version without the miale?
Once again, Selamat datang ker Purists dan Dunia Panerai! ( lol gw juga orang indo sih, dari bandung...)
Ciao!
