Before I understood.....
what Panerai was all about (for me, to be sure) I bought a 197. I can't say I actually liked it but hey, it was a Panerai and I had contracted acute "paneritis". I bought several other models that, today, I consider "made by Panerai" rather than A PANERAI. 
I still have the PAM197 but only because I can't give it away for....free
I think you were wiser than Yoda, to have "sacrificed" it for models that...did it for you. I believe this is one of those "made by Panerai" models that is better to...miss...than to keep in the box

... coming from brands like PP, VC, Rolex etc, having a Panerai with an exclusive movement is for me a very strong proposal... (best of 2 worlds). They did it with Rolex, Minerva etc. The 8 days PR was also in some of their historique pieces!... but the 8...

The crazy days ...
of collecting Panerai. Personally I miss the excitement of those days and will always have a soft spot for a good Panerai.
I kept three of them, two Pre V, the Logo and the Mare, and one Vendome, the PAM 249 so called the " Cali ". Unfortunately gone.
I didn't find anything which pleased me, till the unveiling of the PAM 372, the 587 and the PAM 662. Well, there was the Mare PAM 300 but unwearable.
Superb Radiomir and very nice shot too ... And a exclusive pièce !!
But the platinium case was not too heavy ?
