It's not about flaunting your ware

Aug 14, 2010,21:58 PM

I really like what you wrote in the first half of your response. But this is not about showing off a couple of SEs - there are much rarer watches out there to even consider a 249 or 232 rare.

I think 'special' would be an appropriate term. Because the 249, 232 and 127 are all essentially DNA watches that go back to the history and heritage of the brand, people buy them, I buy them because I can appreciate it for what it is.

However, I am actually talking specifically about this direct swapping business that's going on here. Swap a case and caseback out of a 249, take a dial from a 232....and voilà! A new watch. And that's not cool to me; I can't appreciate.

Just like Jester had said it so well...a b*stard child. It's a love/hate relationship for me. Gonna try to see it more as a child and not a b*stard...

And we have a new Radiomir PAM 294. What is your take on the watch?

Honestly, I am majorly disappointed. Yeah, sure.......you can have micro editions like the PAM 349 (different dial, different movement) and PAM 267 (just so because the MM text and Angelus movement is special!) but can this PAM 294 even qualify as a micro...

Nicolas is on vacations I'll say it this time. Nothing new from Panerai! But than again isn't this reason why we are mad about the brand at the same time? Endless variations of pretty much the same dream come true for Panerai lover and as in all good rela...

Depends on how you define mad

But you bet I'm mad at OP

are you

 By: Jester : August 14th, 2010-20:37
mad AT them or mad ABOUT them? Let's face it, a production of about 2,000 pieces for 232/249 isn't exclusive to start with so another 50 pieces or so has hardly any dilution effect. Actually like you I have both the 232 and 249 and I sort of like that com...

LOL I hate to admit it

But while I'm mad AT them...I'm also mad ABOUT them ;-))) But I promised myself after my rant I'm going to take it easy. Maybe all i have to do is to get a PAM 294 LOL...Anyway, a very good Sunday to you and all here at thepurists.

Good one :0)

my definition of Panerai mad is: in phase one you are mad about it in second phase at them and in terminal phase about them

Everyone needs to realize that Panerai will make slight changes

 By: AnthonyTsai : August 14th, 2010-15:31
to every single model so it can make new models. There's only so many different things you can do with the current designs, so expect slight variations in new models like different color dial, different colored hands, different color luminova, text CNC'ed...

Anthony I agree with your comments 100%. If we as buyers are aware of this, why are we buying or thinking of buying more and more of the same look pieces? great marketing. I love my 312 and want another. the practical me inside stops me every time when I ...

Why do we buy different models that look the same?

 By: AnthonyTsai : August 14th, 2010-19:01
It's just the power of the brand and design which makes us all go ooOoOo la la. Just like how Rolex collectors buy all the different Daytonas or Submariner models. They sort of all look the same right? Same thing applies with Panerai. - AT

Hmmm...

I think I could tell the differences among a 232, 249, 309, 322 and 349. Those subtle differeNces are aokay. The Radiomir line Has to expand and this is but it's evolution. But a 294 - way too similar to a 232! Swapping cases, casebacks and crystals just ...

it's impossible to re-invent the Wheel. with a couple of Models they have: Luminor and Radiomir, you can only do so much to come out with something NEW !!. cause they have to stick to their Roots. i'm hoping to see another: * Fiddy * 47mm Luminor Base * 4...

I think the key

 By: Jester : August 14th, 2010-17:59
is that exclusivity really doesn't mean much for Panerai so as long as you didn't buy your piece for that reason, then hopefully you won't feel taken... I'm just holding my breath waiting to see when the variation for PAM341 and PAM300 will make their app...

agreed

I bought it because I always wanted one. never once thought it was exclusive. It is a good quality and beautiful watch. exclusive is overused these days. some pieces are harder to get than others. true for every low volume consumer product. I understand i...

I bet most of us thought that

 By: Mr.Gatsby : August 14th, 2010-20:28
Buying a 127, 232 or 249 for what it is (a beautiful watch) was not just the only reason. Being part of a group of 1950, 1938 and 1936 owners make it special. That's what those production numbers were suppose to mean in the first place, and albeit being a...

Yes, and to a certain extent..

 By: Jester : August 14th, 2010-20:52
we've only got ourselves to blame. It's us, the consumers/collectors, who snapped up all those special edition in a heart beat so it only make sense for the company to take advantage of it. I still remember the initial special edition were made in 500 pie...

I think I can appreciate your standpoint

Enjoy our little debate here, Alec. Seems like your approach towards the firm and it's watches is a well thought out one. Hope to see you in HK sometime. Caught up with Philipp the last time round and it was a real pleasure.

u mean u came to HKG

inner circle, cult...are the scenarios where we (the Panerai's "guys") would like to belong to. We need to find...additional...value in every watch we purchase. As for Panerai, they just want to sell watches, turn in a profit and grow the consumer base. I...

IMHO Panerai is trapped in the past. In some ways this is great for the consumer as you can basically get every combination of case/dial/case-back etc, think 44mm Luminor's and strong DNA is why we are all here loving our PAMs. However, the challenge is h...

This is why I'm waiting for a brand new case shape

I don't know when it will happen, but it's got to happen sometime! Cheers, Anthony

or they will first start to

utilise the Big Egiziano and Mare Nostrum case more and more PANERAI is die hard brand and that's beauty of it Cheers Damian

Sorry, but.....

like the Cellini collection of Rolex? Who would be interested in that, I wonder. It's axiomatic that, every time a...brand....creates a new model, they do so in order to give the "appearance" of change and sell more...old models. Cheers - Sergio

I think Panerai is just .... very lazy !!!!

 By: P@trick@Belgium : August 15th, 2010-10:52
you know, ( 2 models X all variations of metals ) X all colours of dials= getting bored IMO oh I forgot you can make them in 42-44-45-47mm also why don't they just have the guts to create a new model for god's sake !!! or use at least the case of the Ferr...

I agree it does seem lazy

 By: Aless156 : August 16th, 2010-00:39
with the 294 it seems that someone literally did think "lets combine the spare parts we have for the 232 and with the 249 parts and call it a new watch", with no additions. I'm not sure how you can describe that other than being lazy. I think there is a d...

i don't know about New Case .!

 By: Tony A.H : August 16th, 2010-14:30
i think Panerai is sticking to their Original Case Desing ( Luminor & Radiomir ). to go for something totally New ?! i doubt it. i don't think they will. but they'll have a Zillion of Variants for sure.

i'm in love with it since you asked.

i have the 232 as well and i'm not threatened that it's gonna lose it's Presitge after the 294 Introduction... the 232 is True to it's DNA. it'll always be a SPECIAL Watch (beside being a L.E). and don't forget that you have a couple of Sweet Watches. enj...

the 294 is absolutely awesome, no confusion for me

SWOT: Resource for information on the Boutique Series?

Given OP doesn't catalog the boutique series watches in their online catalog, curious if there's a resource that lists them in? Cheers, Sean
