Officine Panerai

a delayed response

Pricing has been a hotly debated topic relating to Panerai and other watch brands.  The Panerai precious metals, perhaps with the exception of the PAM21, have not seemed to do as well as SS.  The history of the brand as a military watch probably adds to that reality.   I assume that the Boutiques and the ADs no longer have either of the Calis for sale and the after market has the 249 selling at a premium and the 262 at around retail, or perhaps a little below (once in awhile there is a 262 being offered at about 10% over retail but I don't think any are sold for that much).

Where the market will go from here is anyone's guess, and I would not recommend buying either strictly for investment, but given Panerai's continued premium pricing of its platinum models the 262 appears to me, at this time, to be a good value, in comparison to the 249 and the other currently offered platinum models (which I believe are at least a $10K premium over the 262).

Those of us interested in Panerai are fortunate on some other models to also have the choice of case materials, such as the PAM190 (SS) and the PAM198 (platinum).  To date it appears the 190 has appreciated and the 198 remained somewhat flat.  My view is that this will change long term particularly because of the tobacco dial of the 198, the limited units (50), etc. but the 190 seems to have already begun to appreciate while the 198 has not.  Perhaps it is because the 190 was built over 3 years and the retail price has increased.

Whatever, time will tell, in the meantime, both the 249 and the 262 should give its owner alot of enjoyment and that is what it is all about.
