Perhaps it was also that they had one foot still relying on the Frey calibre sizes while the other was on the advanced finishing, dials, cases and retooling.
So the size of case to movements were sometimes a bit disproportionate.
Nonetheless, Gnutti period Minerva’s are certainly still prized. They did a lot of hard work and respected the Minerva brand name and heritage.
Richemont/MB got lucky by being at the right time and place to buy them and inherit a lot of the work done by Gnutti.
A little bird told me that GP was approached by Gnutti to purchase Minerva. Gino Macaluso declined in the end.

Nd recalls some of the early online forum controversy surrounding Minerva. The finishing changed under Gnutti but it also seems to have finished him 😊🤷🏻♂️

I believe Gnutti had financial issues and some investigations going on with his business empire. The Gnutti period pieces are lovely but some of the case sizes were quite big for my wrist. 🤝
