You usually can't tell the Italian "soft r" when someone speaks English, it's totally a different sound...only if you hear him (or me, or many others) speak in Italian, and know the language well enough, I think it becomes immediately clear.

 

The "rest" of our accent is of course completely Italian (!), it's just the "r" that's much softer...say, closer to skipping it than pronouncing it. I like it, at least on me, but it IS no doubt noticeable! ;-)
