Speculating
Mine was a serial #03XX bought in Singapore in Feb 06.
After reading your posts, it appears that the newer pieces come without the kink.
I am speculating here but there are two possibilities how my EWC lost its kink:
1. They swapped the movement during the service to address the power reserve issue. They probably polished the case because the case came back without a scratch.
2. They took my old caseback and put it on a new case and movement. I remember the piece came back looking brand new although it had the same serial number.
I agree that the kink looks more interesting, red tip or not but I am curious why it was changed.
