I'm Just a Little Confused by JLC
Dec 19, 2015,08:59 AM
I inspected the watch at the Boutique next to the original Geophysic re-issue and JLC's other offerings. It's a perfectly nice piece, with hefty if not elegant proportions. The dead seconds doesn't delight or disturb me, as I don't relate it to quartz watches in any way. And I recognize the technical savvy required to accomplish it. But I look at the watch in the context of JLC's other offerings and don't really understand where they are taking us.
How many time only/time and date automatics do we need? Is there a point where choice simply paralyzes a buyer and results in no choice at all? How do all these Ultra-Thins, Master Controls and now Geophysics relate to each other? Or to the brand? I fear that JLC is producing watches like the new Geophysic because they can...not because they are outfitting a well-considered line strategy. Perhaps the "something for everyone" approach is a strategy that works well in the showroom, like laundry detergent brands in the supermarket. But I wonder what it's doing for those of us who expect JLC to project a singular personality and set of values brought forth in a cohesive product line. Ken

Some thoughts

The World Timer is great, a real winner. On the UT, the dead second I think is okay for me, but on the "Geophysic" it would bother me as looking too Quartz. The movement is a great addition. CC
My take on the Geophysic True Seconds
By: skyeriding : December 11th, 2015-02:57
Given the choice for a JLC now for me it'd be a tug of war between the simple Master Control Date and the Geophysic True Seconds. I compare them as the two simple dress watches with date within the JLC line (not counting the MUTs). In my opinion, the new ...

You are probably right in saying that the True Second is for connoisseurs and dead second enthusiasts. you are right when you say that it is not a complication, I would rather say a sophistication. Added to the world time, with the Cal 772, which is a com...
Saw the Jaeger Lecoultre Geophysic Universal Time and True Seconds ...
By: nilomis : December 11th, 2015-03:12
Several times and, even being impressed by the technicalities of the "true seconds", it's not for me. Explaining: True Seconds It may be a technical wonder but, call me old style, I still prefer the seconds hand "hoovering" over the dial and not ticking. ...
Still love my UT.
By: TheMadDruid : December 11th, 2015-04:09
Since I know that this watch is mechanical, I am not bothered by the quartz-like movement of the seconds hand. Until I actually played with the watch at a dealer's shop, I did not know how I would feel about that. It can actually be fascinating, even entr...
Interesting, as you could say exactly the same thing for any world time.
By: amanico : December 11th, 2015-06:44
At the beginning, you have to figure out how it works. Then, once you got it, it is easy to get used to it. The detail on the UT is that the cities ring doesn't move. Which makes it simpler, but the fun of changing the cities doesn't exist on the UT. Than...
Like most people, I really like the UT.
By: Luis6 : December 11th, 2015-05:23
As for the true second, I'm not really bothered by the jumping second hand since I know it's a mechanical watch. I just have one wild thought: Perhaps a transparent dial to reveal the true second mechanism?
My 5 cents
By: agyzace : December 11th, 2015-05:55
I really like the UT version and it is great that JLC has added another great watch in its own right to compliment the rest of their glorious range. I like the dead beats, but would prefer such watch without seconds probably. Having said that, the size of...
Your points are very interesting, Alexandros.
By: amanico : December 11th, 2015-06:56
As it shows that it is super difficult to please to everybody. and this different opinion of yours contributes to the charm of this place, I must say. About the size, some will say that it " saves " legibility. The 5110 is not super legible, but it is par...
Your points fully cover my thoughts, dearest Nicolas
By: agyzace : December 11th, 2015-08:22
I also find the seconds hand a no issue. They can or not exist. Either way is fine. What make life for these watches difficult is the aesthetic masterclass of the 5110p and 5130p. They are so beautifully sculpted and harmonious, while they can be discrete...
The True Seconds is for me a very appealing watch...
By: BentN : December 11th, 2015-15:26
It's look is very classic and understated yet elegant. Easily an everyday watch. (Yupp...another watch for every day use - my best excuse, haha) BUT, I definitely relate to your sentence: "Some said that they were disturbed by the fact that the second han...
I am still feeling the UT
By: rnaden : December 11th, 2015-17:13
The dial is by far the most attractive I've seen anywhere and the colors are deep and beautiful. The true seconds is not a deal maker or breaker for me. Nice addition but to me I have just a very slight preference for the regular sweep instead of true bes...
Thanks for sharing your interesting feedback, Richard.
By: amanico : December 11th, 2015-21:28
Especially on the presence of the date. As for the dead second, I guess we have to fully understand its sophistication to be able to appreciate it. But there will always be haters of these jumping seconds... Like you and some others, I feel the movement o...

... These watches... The new movement is an amazing piece of technology and just by nature of its design makes for exciting possibilities. The deadbeat seconds feature is cool and I love the talk that it turns people off because it looks like a quartz wat...
L. Angeles would have been better, indeed.
By: amanico : December 12th, 2015-08:33
Thanks for your input, my friend. There is a lot to love on the Geophysic UT, a watch which dangerously tempts me, but my ange gardien is that damn Duometre. I agree with you on the dead second. Maybe you can ask for a special order, a customization of th...

Hi all, two months later,

The owner's point of view is always interesting.
By: amanico : December 12th, 2015-09:26
It helps to know if you're getting rid of it, or not, after a while. Obviously, the love affair goes on. Good! Very nice background, too, my friend. All the best, Nicolas
I saw the UT yesterday (real life)
By: Arie - Mr Orange : December 15th, 2015-10:13
and I have to say it looks really good. In gold. The steel version doesn\'t make the dial pop. Oh and I have to say that the screws in the dial are not that \'in your face\' at all. They are really really tiny. But once you know they are there....you will...
Hahahahahaha

Brilliant
I agree with you, Arie

I like the steel (I LOVE the steel True Seconds) but the Gold UT is a really special watch. Even the reindeer agree (although their minds are on something else right now). ...

Just tried it on today!
By: artyca : December 19th, 2015-07:47
And was very impressed by the impeccable case and movement finishing. Dare I say almost as good as the workmanship from Patek or Lange! The proportions is beautiful and the true seconds movement is unique. Definitely a watch for a true watch collector! ...

But don't you think it has always been like that? Look at the vintage offer. Look at all the Memovoxes, or the products like some diving watches from the past. Were they really JLC? The Master Mariner Deep Sea, for example, or the Dolphin? Or some more ex...
