8 day movement
Sep 27, 2021,17:55 PM
These BP movements are really 8 day movements with a mechanism to stop them after 7 days. Since they are automatics, the main spring has a ‘Y’ at the outer end that acts as a clutch against the inner circumference of the barrel.
It may be that by “over winding” the watch, you are getting the spring fully wound to the point of the spring slipping while maxing out the power reserve hand at its full position. This would also take place by wearing the watch so that is continues to wind with your activity after the power reserve subdial indicates a full wind.
I’ve never seen a schematic of how the mechanism to stop the watch at 7 days works, so I’m theorizing on its interaction with a conventional, but very large, automatic mainspring setup.

Was this after a full wind?

I had a similar issue with a brand new Portuguese 5007 and had a moment of sadness/rage, but a watchmaker friend advised me to give it a full wind (wind to full reserve plus 7 additional turns for whatever reason) and then letting it run down. Seemed to d...

Why does it need to go to 0?
I have owned 3 big pilots. On All of them

the power reserve goes to zero when completely discharged. That is the way the movement is supposed to work. If it does not then there is something wrong inside the movement. Ergo , it needs to go back and get fixed. Look at the pic below. Both of my BPs....

Aligns with a previous post above: Wanted to give you an update on the whole situation ...Took my watch to the AD, they sent it to Texas..Texas didn't find any issues, but clarified, that while wounding the watch, after reaching the 7 day mark, one has to...

With winding both the 8 day Panerais and this 7 day Auto…. I always “over wind” until I hear the clutch “click over” and don’t rely on the actual “full gauge”… so I always go past the full setting…. Obviously I don’t over wind on the movements that have a...

Thanks Darron
I have my 5002 back from service.

Seems to be working now. The power reserve indicator now registers Zero when the watch has stopped. I will see how well it keeps time and if it returns back to zero after winding. ...
Good luck!
