At the same time I also don’t believe we can easily separate prices (market value) from collecting these days. That ship has well and truly sailed. So for me it’s 100% part of the conversation.
The filter is, is there more to your collecting than the market value or how much you had to spend on other watches to get a particular watch.

100% agree.
I’m a little more negative on most events, at least in NYC it’s a bit of a d*%> measuring contest. It can be hard to filter those folks out and get to my people.
I totally understand that as there are some ,,collectors,, with deep pockets that like to show off.
I pref to hang around people who understand the love of watchmaking and collecting. Its not always about how much a watch is valued nowadays . Some find that interesting or the reason why they collect them .

My fault too…I only travel with one. That’s always been the rule.
I think the solution is that next time we just need more people !

In the EU it’s not an issue to take many with but traveling with one is certainly the safe choice 👍🏻

I have met so many wonderful people over my 40 years of collecting. I even went on a couple family vacations with a watch friend who has unfortunately since passed away.
I think when we have already done the hard job, which is filtering for a subset of likeminded watch folks…
…it’s a real shame we (collectively) have not managed to make the next step. 90% of folks I’ve met in person though WPS have been my kind of people. I cannot say the same for other watch related meetups and groups.
