Steel: The Poor Man's Platinum®
May 11, 2024,01:10 AM
Platinum is great, but manufacturers get a huge premium for it over gold. I guess it's tougher to work with, but I think it's a marketing ploy we've all fallen for.
I checked today's metal prices. Platinum is $993 per ounce and gold is $2,360 per ounce.
A yellow gold Rolex Day/Date is $38,500. The same watch in platinum is $63,300, yet platinum is a much less costly metal.
Which is one of the reasons I like steel.
Would I get a platinum watch? Sure. It has a nice heft that steel doesn't have and it's a 'secret that is not evident just by looking at the timepiece.
But the manufacturers have really done a great job on the marketing front : )
