My best guess...

 

Is that the watch "thinks" it is a leap year rather than a regular year, and therefore inserted the 29th.  If so, you will need to adjust the watch forward by 2 years to get it back to the right point in the 4-year cycle.  What you saw (29th jumping to 1st) is consistent with a "leap year" transition.

Hope that this is the issue rather than any mechanical problem!
