but this post is another THREAD altogether.

Well it's nice to see your views on the OTHER SIDE....I can only say the world was never made to be FAIR. If god wanted us to be EQUALs...all of us will look, think, talk, walk the same. Anyway i come from the not so well off group who loves watches...especially your kinda of OUT OF THIS WORLD WATCHES but HEY it doesn't bother me that the Majority of you guys wear CRAZY PRICED watches....If i can afford i BUY if not I will just stick to my CASIO's and what not.

People shoudn't envy what others have, they should be happy with what they have.

It's nice to see your post once in awhile......makes it kinda of a classic.

Cheers and Happy New Year to you and Family.

The MBF HM5 and the Opus V, HM5 will soon be mine.

 By: bernard cheong : January 17th, 2013-19:19
Well, what can I say? I bought the Opus V in 2005 WITHOUT seeing the watch...bec I trusted my instincts. Today, I bought 2 HM watches...the HM5 and finally the HM4 no 3 in Rose Gold (more pics on that later). On facebook or google "bernard cheong", the im...

Awesome photo

A great and interesting collection. Hard to see all the pieces, but besides the MBF and HW, I think I see Devon, UN Freak and Debuthune watches? Wow!

Thanks Dave ...and I see that the purists have GROWN

 By: bernard cheong : January 17th, 2013-21:10
And so many new people too.

Bernard, You have only 2 wrists and yet so many watches =) Just want to say thank you for all the writing, reviews and deep thoughts about so many watches in this forum. Just want to let you know that I bought my UN freak and HM4 after i read your essays ...

Oh..wow. Thanks for telling me about Freak and HM4..

 By: bernard cheong : January 21st, 2013-00:55
I am super happy for you. I can't see the future, and I have no crystal ball, but I am sure these watches will bring you joy and open doors of all sorts of interesting ways of looking at design, engineering and art... Indeed..even a desire to explore poet...

Funny picture Bernard ! Well done as usual ! Best Giancarlo

Good to have you back mate

 By: Hororgasm : January 17th, 2013-21:17
And huge congrats on the HM4. It's a piece that I cannot fathom...sculpture or horology? Is there a need for both as a combination in a product meant for the wrist? Best, Horo

Horogasm..the HM4 is MAD, and so..it is most representative

 By: bernard cheong : January 17th, 2013-21:27
Even down to the name itself. BUT...I now feel as if it will be the ONLY watch that can take on Opus V (platinum). It is way out, just as Opus V was...and it has a soul. I know how it was concieved, not by reading magazines/websites, but from "the beginni...

I am worried that by sharing what I own/bought that it may be seen as inappropriate

i don't know how you manage to get out the house

 By: Tobi : January 17th, 2013-22:19
before lunch time - how do you manage to make the call on which watch to wear :)

GOOD question..answer: I am so insecure that I would always go for my MB&F1 first

 By: bernard cheong : January 18th, 2013-02:56
That watch always breaks ICE. Gets talk. Distracts...even me...till even today. But....I still manage to wear ALL my nearly xxxx watches.

I always loved your posts...

I always loved your posts...and your forthright opinions. Welcome back! Look forward to more! Best, Merv

Collecting watches IS the best skill/knowledge you can take part or teach kids

 By: bernard cheong : January 18th, 2013-03:04
Watch collecting taught me about people. It reveals hard work. It is both art and artisan and even now...invention. It is everything good. Only...I hope it never breeds class division.

Exquisite & extraordinary pieces..

 By: fernando : January 17th, 2013-23:23
not often seen even in the most exclusive circles. Congrats & thanks for sharing them with us. Awesome is all I can think of. :) cheers fernando

Thank you. It is a very obtuse collection.

 By: bernard cheong : January 18th, 2013-03:09
There are only 5 people who have seen ALL my watches. My wife is NOT one of them. Chuckles. That said, I valued them all because it really cost me money and work to buy....and many I bought out of the head, not the heart. That would be my Patek and Lange ...

Congrats Bernard

I think Opus V still out shine HM5 IMHO. Your post as always a good spice to this Forum and ones should use the left brain to read too....LoL Cheers,

Me too. Only thing is that the Opus V is very hard to come by.

 By: bernard cheong : January 18th, 2013-03:14
Even as we speak, I have people out there looking for another one for me.....and the prices asked are too high for me. $300,000 usd is what most people would want...if they are asked to sell, when they don't need the cash. In fact, $450,000 usd is more of...

Congrats Bernard!

Love the HM5 a lot! Nice photo of your excellent collection of watches and the Porsche 911!

That car...cost me the purchase of a HM4 last year.

 By: bernard cheong : January 18th, 2013-03:16
Now, I will not , I hope, be tempted to buy a Boxster.

Congrats Bernard!

 By: andrewluff : January 18th, 2013-03:26
I have yet to see the HM5 in the flesh as was busy in Geneva the week it was released, but will do next week and am really looking forward to it. My original thoughts were not positive on release and I was a bit disappointed but after seeing more pictures...

Ah..the MEAT of philosophy (my weakness, because mine is pseudo)

 By: bernard cheong : January 18th, 2013-05:06
Well, my wife will be the FIRST to kick my statement of owning any HM 4 or 5 into orbits left vacant in larger planets. I agree 50%, disagree 50%. I think that HM5 is a modified HM3 and a half completed HM4. Sounds TERRIBLE. But look...there are the minut...

You lost me...

On any relevance at all between my thoughts and your comments (ramblings?). Maybe you were answering some of your own questions and wanting to hear your own response? Cheers Andrew

It was the stuff I was smokin...kidding.

 By: bernard cheong : January 18th, 2013-05:28
Forgive me...I reread...and I agree with you, even I need to think about what I said...but I guess it is straight from the head. Chuckles. LIVE LONG and prosper even longer.

Bernaard, why would we want your inciteful, unique comments..

 By: Ronald Held : January 18th, 2013-04:58
to end here? Some collection in the boxes that we have seen. I still do not know what i think of the HM5, and that from someone who appreciates a digital dial.

Ronald...dont buy this watch!!!! Unless you want to play the game to the next few levels!

 By: bernard cheong : January 18th, 2013-05:13
Apologies to Max. But as a friend, the HM5 will probably sell quite well. It will appear in many forms. It will be another HM3. BUT..it is MONEY. Money that can be used for many things better. I myself do not have that much money, but I am wanting to play...

Bernard, I do not think that I would be playing in the...

 By: Ronald Held : January 18th, 2013-14:38
Same fashion as you do. OT, but you can get an upgrade for your Devon.

Ronald, I think we are all actually at the same level. Intellectual valuations.

 By: bernard cheong : January 20th, 2013-05:12
I wish that there were less factors that divide collectors into levels. I agree...the american way, that making a Devon, is the way to allow a bigger more even playing field. These Swiss machines are like cameras...the Swiss Alpa brand for example or thei...

Well, Bernard I must say I'm a bit dissapointed by HM5...

By: Mark in Paris : January 18th, 2013-09:33
... even if I love the style and look. But here are some elements I have a problem with: MB&F has always created original, unseen watches. Even if sometime inspired by industry/nature (HM4, HM3 Frog version). But here, even if I like its look, it went...

Yes..I agree. HM5 is going to be hard.

 By: bernard cheong : January 20th, 2013-05:15
I think that HM5 sort of reflects the times of recession and cutbacks, and maybe the only affordable/least expensive of all the machines. Totally agree with you on the observations you made.

Oh..the Sony Nex7 with 30mm macro and also RX1

 By: bernard cheong : January 21st, 2013-00:59
But the macro on the Nex7 is an easier tool for my skill level (low).

Superb looking collection Bernard..........

 By: Topcat30093 : January 19th, 2013-23:33
I just love that Opus V. :)

Yes..agreed, after 20 years, the Opus V remains legendary

 By: bernard cheong : January 21st, 2013-01:03
And if you get a chance to compare finishing...you will also see that it is a standard few can match.

I try if I can, to support watchmaking...Rolex/Patek will not need me

 By: bernard cheong : January 21st, 2013-01:01
But for the smaller makers, I hope my small contributions make a difference. That said, I still bought Rolex every now and then..they do make great value.

Sorry, a digression

 By: sham1 : April 22nd, 2013-04:09
Hello Bernard, Do you have any watches from Manufacture Royale? What do you think of this brand? It is a newish independent with a dynamic owner! Thanks. Regards, Sham

I have seen it, quite impressed, but worried about longevity of the brand

 By: Hororgasm : April 22nd, 2013-04:33
And owners are a bunch of fun guys, even crazy. Had a great time with them last year. However, when one drop that sort of money on a watch, one need to be sure of the longevity of the brand and serviceability of the watches in due course. Sadly, on that c...

 By: sham1 : April 22nd, 2013-06:02
Thanks for the info. I only ask because I did buy an Androgyne when it first came out and they have been quite good so far with after sales service and flying me to Basel this year. I agree though that the longevity of the brand is crucial. Sham {5836733}...

wow !

 By: Gianko : April 17th, 2013-13:24
Did you went to the M.A.D. gallery in January to get them ? The HM 5 is amazing, last time I been there I try it on my wrist the sensation to have it on my wrist was fantastic ! Also the quality of finishing is really high level.....good choice Bernard re...

Oh thanks...just sharing.

 By: bernard cheong : April 20th, 2013-23:41
But I like the HM5 maybe for funny, and personal reasons.
