Excellent piece!

Love the texture of this dial as well as on the movement side. The whole package is very balanced. It is at the same time a classical watch and a modern watch, with a unique style but in a subdued, classy way.
I bet this can transform into many different looks when matched with different straps!

A great intro to a really nice and interesting timepiece. Thank you, Jay!

Another Laine Incoming

 By: Jay (Eire) : October 15th, 2019-03:00
So, sometimes watches just appear. I’ve found that over the last 20+ years of this journey that it’s often the unplanned purchases which are the ones that endure in the collection. Usually this is not completely blind, by that I mean it’s not a watch / br...

I’d seen many posts and pictures but wasn’t sure until I saw in person.

The only drawback for me is the diameter, I wish it was just a little smaller than the 40.5mm. That said, it wears well on a smaller wrist.

Nice watch.

I like the dial color you have chosen, the reworked Unitas movement looks nice too. Enjoy it! Thanks for sharing. Vte

Thank you. I kept it simple, as it fits a nice spot in my collection.

There are, as you may know, many dial choices and he recently added guilloche too. Something for everyone.

Congrats on a wonderful watch!

 By: Spencer Karrington : October 15th, 2019-04:07
Laine is definitely one of my fav watchmakers, especially at that price point and the level of customization available is amazing too! I know it is a unitas movement but for me, with how much they have changed it and made it their own, it does not bother ...

Thanks Spencer.

 By: Jay (Eire) : October 15th, 2019-04:53
The Unitas is perhaps a positive in one sense; with it an independent like Laine does not receive the same hesitation on purchase as Journe for example where many people worry about service costs and future servicing should the brand no longer exist. Ther...

Hi Spencer, is like to clarify

 By: Tim Jackson : October 16th, 2019-09:03

I too was impressed by Laine watches

 By: sham1 : October 15th, 2019-04:31
which I managed to view for the first time in Singapore last Friday. A very good price point I feel for a well finished movement. My only qualm is that I wish it was 2mm smaller! Well done on an astute purchase Jay!!

Yes, a little smaller.

 By: Jay (Eire) : October 15th, 2019-04:51
This is why I’d never have purchased unseen as I thought the measurement (40.5mm) might just have been too big. On the wrist I was happy that it worked, although like you the preference would always be for smaller.

Actually the AD told me it was 39mm

 By: sham1 : October 15th, 2019-05:33
and I believed her as it wore like a 39mm watch. It was only when I did a bit of homework that I discovered it was 40.5mm and I must say it fits so much better on me than say a 40.5mm Richard Lange. But imagine if it was 38.5mm!!!

He! He! Me too :-)

 By: sham1 : October 16th, 2019-04:42
I have tried the Richard Lange many times`trying to get it to fit my wrist but no amount of gym work has helped!!

Hi Sham

Question: as a seasoned collector and connoisseur of independent watchmaking, how does this compare to the KVs, UJs and FPJs of this world? Where does it match, where does it come close, where do you see gaps? All relative to its attractive price point an...

Thank you but

 By: sham1 : October 23rd, 2019-11:45
I am definitely not a connoisseur of independent watchmaking - perhaps in ten years time! The core of my collection are actually Pateks but I find myself drawn more these days to the allure of the independent watchmakers. I would compare Laine to Kudoke w...

According to the AD in Singapore

 By: sham1 : October 23rd, 2019-21:07
Laine produces a few thousand pieces a year whereas UJs production is less than a thousand even with the Alfred. Mind you, I trust that the new 40mm case Alfred will attract more customers. If it was in 38mm, I would be interested, not because of the move...

See I told you I was not a connoisseur! :-)

 By: sham1 : October 23rd, 2019-22:45
Yes I too would be keen to know the production figures of both houses. I guess the fact that the Singapore AD got the diameter of the watch wrong could mean her production figures for Laine may also be incorrect. But yes, when I said UJ produces fewer tha...

Laine, a single person, produces 50-70 watches a year as far as I know.

 By: Jay (Eire) : October 24th, 2019-03:23
I was told he is looking to add staff, watchmaker, in order to increase that output above 100. Surely UJ make multiples of this annually.

 By: sham1 : October 24th, 2019-10:00
I stand corrected then even though the information was derived from an AD - 3,000 pieces per annum to be exact! Yes UJ make more than 70 a year. Well, I hope they do or else they would be in trouble!!

Great watch by a great up and coming watchmaker!

Along with Coyon and Dornblüth my favorite take on the Unitas workhorse movement. How thick is the case including crystal?

I think it’s 11mm, or a little above that.

 By: Jay (Eire) : October 16th, 2019-04:05
It’s difficult to judge unless seen in person. From the measurements alone, and the pictures indicating the style of case, I would not have purchased. But in person I was satisfied that the watch wore well on my wrist, despite the measurements potentially...

Gorgeous catch

Hope to one day handle one of these, look very promising to say the least. Enjoy!!

Beautiful! Congrats!

I bought my Laine without seeing it in the metal, and when it arrived, I was breathless. SO MUCH better in the metal than in pictures - which says a lot since they look amazing in pictures too! Congrats on this beauty

 By: Jay (Eire) : October 16th, 2019-14:02
My hesitation was purely on the size. I had no doubt seeing the various incomings and other posts elsewhere that the product was good.

Excellent piece!

We’ve seen a lot of frosted finish on the movement side of many nice watches in recent years and it is something I like the look of very much. Fortunately here I was able to get the rose gold, but the yellow and anthracite look great too. But the dial sid...

Yes, the dial is really top notch

 By: mrds : October 23rd, 2019-09:19
Reminds me of the dials of VC’s Excellence Platine versions. I like them a lot.

Beautiful piece!
