Plus also with the handset of your "steam" telephone and near parts of a flat-screen monitor.  My car sadly has magnetic catches on lockers etc.  Magnet on my messenger bag I carry every day.  I had to buy a different non-magnetic cover for my iPhone because the magnetic one obviously interfered with the compass app.  That was crazy!

Only last week I was wearing one of my veteran watches on my right wrist (even though I am right-handed) and working at my desk with my desk 'phone close near on my right side.  When I checked that watch's time against my radio clock after work, it had gained 17 seconds during the daytime when normally it keeps time -3 seconds/24 hours.  Worried I had magnetised the balance spring, I reset the watch and monitored it for a couple of days.  It was back to its -3/secs/day.  Phew!

A vintage watch I took on holiday was put in the hotel room's safe.  Unknown to me (and to her) my wife put her iPad in the safe on top of my watch and other stuff.  Next time I checked that watch, it was gaining about 20 seconds/hour!  I have since demagnetised the watch at home and it seems to have recovered.

Happy Easter and keep safe from all humans for the while!

Laptops magnetism

I noticed some strong-ish magnetic effects from my laptop today. Has anyone: - experienced magnetisation of a watch due to working on a laptop - any scientific data about the levels emitted and their risk to watches? Thanks!

How does one de-magnetize a watch at home?

I’d be interested to learn, because only half of my watches are touted to be anti-magnetic

I bought . .

. . . an electric de-magnitizer awhile ago. Useful for small tools etc as well. In answer toThomas_3 below, if you pass a small compass around a laptop, you should find a magnetic source, which is in a small area only, but a bit powerful. I think there is...

Maybe I should stop working for good and enjoy the garden

Not trying to start a debate here,

but I work on a laptop every single day, and I wear a watch every single day, even while working from home. None of my watches have ever shown signs of becoming magnetized.

Solved the problem many years ago...

By Not wearing a mechanical watch while on a computer.
