What were they thinking?

The surprising answer is that they were thinking, up to at least 1980, that advanced, thin or high-function quartz watches *superior to the competition* were going to win at least the high end market back to Switzerland.

Business setbacks while the hoped-for saviors were in R&D were excused by the exchange rate

Feelings of resentment of having your proud past called “obsolete” (by Americans and other foreigners, but also by other Swiss) may have clouded judgement, even as it motivated a future renaissance.

What needed to be done: factory automation - didn’t happen for the premium brands because reasons. The low-end mechanical market was ceded early on.
