Very interesting story, Riddler, thanks for sharing it!

Your story touches on several points, including the ones in the sub thread just above, that though ultimately we are our own judges, but how we are perceived does inevitably influence our lives whether we want it to or not; rightly, fairly, or not. Which is not to say we should live our lives mainly for how others perceive us...there must be a balance.
Bonding was the underlying phenomenon you experienced, with the manager, over timepieces. It may have been shoes, it may have been shirts, but ultimately it was the sense of commonality that overcame the sense of distance which originally allowed them to close themselves off from you even when they could accommodate you if they wished.
I see no showing off in your story, you were sharing sobwe could all learn from your experience, together...
Cheers, and may we finally meet in person soon!

Sharing versus showing off
By: ThomasM : December 13th, 2017-05:11
Hi, I have long said that what most of us do here is share, not show off. To me, there is a critical difference. But I acknowledge that to some others, they may not see a difference. Many years ago I went to a networking party with a "little sister" - our...
I believe there is a difference...
By: KMII : December 13th, 2017-05:45
But in order to tell it, one needs to be on the 'inside'. If you have two people passionate about something and a third who is not, it is easy for the third to get the 'showing off' impression. If all three are into it, this is less likely to be gotten er...

whether it be in person or online-showing something and talking about it, or explaining it/discussing a topic so as to allow another the knowledge and benefit of your expertise. The difference between sharing and showing-off is in the manner of the presen...
My two cents.

I believe it is entirely based on your intent. You cannot control how the recipient reacts, but if your intent is to share and educate, then I believe how it is perceived is a secondary concern. Be true to your heart.
I used to say and believe that...

And in fact raised my kids with that as well. Hi, Vincman, I agree with you, 100%. But though we can say and believe that we know the truth, what other people perceive is not important. Except that it is, as it will then influence how they interact with y...
agreed on all points! π

hi Joe, I hope we as a community can give the benefit of the doubt rather than be tightly strung to assume the worst. rather someone who doesnt belong chooses to leave rather than be pushed out, though the latter is admittedly sometimes necessary I rememb...
Thomas, I think our next local GTG should be at Humblebrags restaurant
By: AnthonyTsai : December 13th, 2017-17:07
There's a Humblebrags restaurant that I've eatten at before The burger there isn't too bad. Yelp link below: And to answer your question - yes there's a difference between sharing and showing off. But sometimes some people are so "tainted" that they see ...

It is often difficult to define the difference between sharing and showing off but it is easier to know when it is happening We have a hobby that ranges from high end crazy price pieces to $100 watches and this phenomenon can occur anywhere along the spec...
Julian, I agree and hence my OP (original post)
By: ThomasM : December 14th, 2017-18:03
1. We should always try to be aware with how we are coming across. Not obsessively, but certainly empathetically. It always seemed a bit arrogant to me when I hear, "that's (not) what I meant" (so it's your problem for not getting it correctly.) 2. A grea...
There is no real way to be certain...

And often our organic enthusiasm is misperceived as showing off. Hi, Ron, Many times the crux, imho, lies in the relationship between the parties in the interaction. It is difficult to share if one of the parties is not interested in "sharing" ie giving a...

I agree with most of the posts here and would like to share my tidbits I think we have to consider what is the environment we're in to begin with. Are we sharing with other like minded ppl in "any type of interest" or are we sharing with ppl that are most...

Dear TM, it's one of the very first post I reas on this site (I'm a new user). I have to say your opinion is very interesting, I think there is a difference indeed, and it depends on where you are sharing/showing off something and with whom. I also think ...

Dear F, Welcome to our community! I agree with you, and hopefully, while you will find that most of us here love to share but showing off, not so much, we still try to be polite and civil to all. Looking forward to learning more about you and your interes...
