Union Glashütte Arrives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Part 1 of 2, The Watches

Sep 03, 2009,11:28 AM

Union Glashütte landed in South East Asia recently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia after many years in Europe.

On 18 August Swatch Group Malaysia team and the President of Union Glashütte organised a launch event  to introduce
their latest 2009 collection to the Malaysia watch enthusiasts.

The Glashütter watch manufactures were bought by the Swatch Group AG in the year 2000.
The intention of the group is to make Union Glashütte wristwatches once again in the style of founder of the brand Union Glashütte,
Johannes Dürrstein:

"Watches which have everything to make them accurate and beautiful but nothing to make them expensive."

Arrived at the venue an hour early to have a look of the 2009 collections before the guests arrived .....

Met  Mr Armin Graeser, Sales & Marketing Manager of Union Glashütte, and he presented the 2009 collection available in the Store.

The new Union Glashütte comes in five lines :  Averin, Belisar, Seris, Viro and Noramis.

The current design has moved away from the previous beautiful classics which are similar to Glashütte Original.

Understand from Armin, last two years, Swatch Group has decided to remake the brand to focus on more contemporary designs
to target at a bigger audience of both genders with attractive pricing.

The brand is now sort of  using the etablissage system with a touch of traditional German finishing.

We began with the more exciting, the Averin.

For the detailed specification, please click here.

A 42.5mm square and chunky design with a full calender and chronograph.

The stainless steel case thickness is 15.65mm.

The date is painted in 3 row-format on the dial and pointed by 3-arm-hand.   The date-hand is indicating '5'th.

The Chronograph function with 60-second (the big yellow hand), 30-minute (represented on the 12 o'clock subdial) and ...

12-hour counters   (represented on the 6 o'clock subdial) with the moonphase indicator.

The 9 o'clock subdial has 2 hands!
One is the small-second and the other is a 24-hour hand.

The Day and Month is in the 12 o'clock subdial.

The indexes were not hand-applied.  Both the patterns and indexes  were embossed out with a seven-strike process.
After which the windows in the subdials were milled out.

The hour and minute hands were satin-finished in the middle with the edges polished.

The new logo (dropping the previous house logo) on the crown.

Day correction using push-button at 10 o'clock .

Note the sapphire and caseback are convex.
Fortunately the sapphire is anti-reflective coated on both sides otherwise it would be difficult to read the convex dial
which has more reflection though it is costlier to make.

The short lug design enable the straps to embrace even smaller wrist nicely.
More wristshots later.

Another variation of the Averin and some close up pictures ...

The date was set to '31' st.

This piece is with Day in German, which could be swopped by the watchmaker.

The indexes are brush-finished on top while the chamfers are  polished before galvanised.
Efforts also put in for the hands, the edges are slightly beveled.

A close up.  High precision is needed to achieve this high resolution embossed index and the pattern.

Which variation do you prefer ?

The movement is named as U7751,  a robust  ETA 7751.  All components were finished before assembly.

Rhodinised rotor with brand-name skeletonised (milled out).

Dcorated with blued screws, perlage and stripes.

The deployant is decorated too.

Next something for the Ladies .... The Seris.

The Seris also consists of pieces without the diamond settings.
For more information, please refer to :
news.watchprosite.com

Case size at a comfortable 36mm with sixty-eight pave set diamonds on the bezel and eight individuals pieces on the
dial.

Dial is with sun-ray pattern.

Onyx cabochon on the crown.

Hands are polished.  Just wish they are slimmer, as it will be more elegant.

Sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective coating, reduces reflection and let the brillance of diamond-indexes to shine through.

With white leather straps, this piece is quite a stunner.
Another piece with Mother of Pearl dial  surprised me as well!

The movement is U2895-2, decently finished and decorated.

Next is the Belisar Chronograph  Model ... a guest was waiting to view smile

There is a new interesting variation with carbon fibre dial and PVD case which should be on the way in.
A press photo for your reference and for the detailed specification, please click here.

The pieces available in the evening were the variation with yellow hands (the pictures below) and the striking red hands.

Case diameter at 43mm and this piece is with metal bracelet.

The yellow-white chapter ring around the subdial hinted an association to racing and speed.

The movement is ETA 7753, second-subdial at 9 o'clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock subdial and 30-minute counter
subdial at 3 o'clock.

What your thoughts PinkPanther?

As this watch is 'Made in Germany', and that it has changed its direction? Kong

Although...

the designs are interesting and in vogue (especially the ladies model) I, too, would prefer their original movement to the ETA one. On the other hand, if it means that the watches are sold for a lower price then it is a good opportunity for someone to be ...

Thanks for the inputs, PinkPanther...

No doubt for those who knows UNION earlier, previous movements were more attractive, as many had voiced out. We shall see how the brand's new direction will be. Kong

A lot of surprises from Union.

1. No more "temple" logo. 2. Use ETA movement. 3. Completely new look - not a tiny bit of the shadow of old Union. 4. Very generous - lucky draw gift is a watch 5. In the same category with Longines but much more expensive. Thanks Swatch Group and Mr. Ber...

Thanks Kong.

But I'm quite disappointed. For me, UG was before an excellent brand with in-house calibers at a reasonable price. We all know the story and even if the design of these watches is interesting or at least original, we are far from the horological contents ...

Too bad, looks like not much original DNA left

Looks like a nice event but I have to agree I like the old brand better. My 0.02 cents of course

No worries Magrew...

I miss the previous pieces too. From the chart, the group could have positioned the brand to address another segment and not to compete against own more prestigious GO. Here 2 links for you : www.thepurists.com and www.tp178.com Kong

It surprised many who knows the brand earlier. Thanks Ling & FX for the inputs ...

Perhaps its time to let UG venture its new road. Though I missed the previous pieces as reviewed by Marcus and John ei8htohms. Kong

I don't mean to pile on the bandwagon here... but like everyone else, I'm Very Glad I purchased my UNION watches when I did: The reverse next to an IWC 3707: Who knows... perhaps UNION will be revived again... but 'till then, I wince when I see their new ...

Your pictures are just fantastic! I do miss the earlier UGs though, as I thought they were very well done with pretty movements to boot -- there was one regulator model that I particularly enjoyed. I feel that the spirit of the old Union watches didn't qu...

Thanks Daos ...

 By: Kong : September 4th, 2009-03:02
If you see the above prior posts, all have noted the current UG is a brand new company. Perhaps the company should try one model with the previous movement. Kong

the design looks quite different than what we found UG in the past...

 By: FanFrancisco : September 4th, 2009-04:13
thanks Kong for the wonderful post and nice photos as usual. by the way, it is interesting to know UG is now going out from Europe to Asia. when will they be coming to Singapore? i like to see the real metal in person. stefan

A business counterpoint....

 By: MTF : September 4th, 2009-22:09
The old Union watches were only for Austria and Germany, thus very limited legal channels. Yes - we had grey imports in some countries but not enough for the masses. Some of the manufacturing capacity of the GO movements were diverted to Union. With the r...

I like the traditional dress models that emit the strong "German pedigree" in watch design and proportion - models that are like the ones posted by "patrizio", and "Bry_j1". Those are truly beautiful pieces. I am a bit saddened to see such brand with alre...

Thanks Jon, as explained by MTF, ...

it is logical not cannibalised its own more prestigious segment. Indeed only time will tell. End of the day, it is business and to survive and proper, products need to appeal to masses with their current level of pricing. Kong
