Hi everyone,
I’ve been a dedicated student of the hobby for over a decade, and I’m finally at a crossroads where I need some community perspective on a final "grail" move.
My wrist is 19cm. For years I have chased what I thought were perfect proportions with the 15300, Panda Daytona, and the Pepsi. I still haunt myself over a 5970J I was offered in Stockholm on my honeymoon. Tony Kavak gave me a deal for $150k, but I passed on it at the time because I didn't want to expose the full extent of my watch sickness to my new bride. The reference has stayed with me ever since.
I am moving toward a two-watch collection. My daily is a 5164A that I have worn for everything from the dental office to Disney World since buying it for $27k back in 2015. For the second slot, I am debating the definitive Patek. I looked at the 3940P, but I am not sure I can pull that off on a 19cm wrist as half of a two-watch rotation. I have also accepted that I am priced out of the 5004P.
The question is whether I go for the "perfect 10" 5970P, even if it means liquidating my 993 Turbo and my modern staples. Or, is there more long-term soul in the "perfectly flawed" 5070J with the yellow gold and black dial?
On a 19cm wrist, does the 5070 case size and dial tension become a strength rather than a flaw? I could trade the 15300, Daytona, and Pepsi for the 5070J and keep the car, but I wonder if I will always be looking at the for-sale ads for the 5970P.
I have attached some wrist shots for context. Appreciate any thoughts from those who have owned or wrestled with these two Lemania icons.
