Some prop guy didn’t do his job -looks as though McQueen is wearing his own watch ( way too big for 1943 -when the picture is set ) actually looks like a modern piece

Depends you had some watches which were quite big. Longines, Panerai ( Rolex ), IWC, Omega had watches which were way above 40 mm.

Perhaps he wore his personal 417? Pretty close to Hanharts of WW2 era...
