My wife would say she gets to enjoy the scenery

No need to worry about avoiding small sharp objects, shifting the gears, doing the braking (much more effort than a single), or even pedaling with effort until I shout "Wake up back there and start pushing". It is scary though if you don't trust the captain.
Best story I have on this point is an annual ride with the blind, where the tandem captain is paired up with a blind "stoker" as we say, and off we go to give a sense of freedom and excitement the blind person may not have experienced before. I had a 20-something lady on the back and we were coasting downhill on a park road (no cars to worry about), almost like flying ...
and I saw we'd soon hit a steep uphill. I couldn't get her legs revolving fast enough to shift down, so we hit the steep spot in a much higher gear than desirable. In fact, we ground to a stop and I barely kept us from toppling over. The gal on the back was laughing crazily saying this was the most fun she'd had in years... while I was sweating bullets trying to keep us upright.
I remember it each time we go to this area in Balboa Park.
