For the average guy off the street.....

I think the watch industry is one that is full of smoke and mirrors.  By that I mean the average person buying a watch usually knows absolutely nothing about it and in my past experiences there are a lot of people behind the counter who know almost nothing about what they are selling as I have experience d this first hand.  Some sales people don't know the difference between automatic, manual and quartz movements.  I probably have forgotten more about watches than the average guy will ever know and what I know is minuscule compared to most on here.  I know that sometimes the packaging a watch comes in/with costs more than the movement inside it.  I seem to remember several years ago a well known independent watch maker's employees were using very cheap movements sourced from Russia, if memory serves me correctly and putting them in watches costing into the several thousands of dollars.

In the watch industry, like many others it is definitely buyer beware.  I have come to realize that one does not need to spend multi thousands of dollars to get a a nice watch, many buyers may be led down that smoky path and not get exactly what they thought they were getting.  There are some very good "fakes" out there that can fool the best of us.  I know of an experienced watchmaker that bought a PP at an auction and was duped as it had a movement in it that definitely didn't belong in a PP.

Cheers to all and buyer beware!!

...of this post? Are you asking a question? Providing your observation? Trying to educate the community? I'm confused what the point of your post is.

Got it!

I don't think your observation is an inaccurate one; although I think you would get the same result if you were to logon to a sports car forum. They likely have significantly more knowledge than the average Joe who owns a BMW.
