Yes, this was an intersting piece. My understanding is that the 6497 was originally designed for pocket watches and the small seconds subdial would be 180 degrees from the crown, so at 6 o'clock on a pocket watch, traditional layout. Stowa has some 6498 F... 

Just looked them up...yes, 6497 in a 44mm case. Cool Panerais! The Stowa Flieger with the 6497 is 41mm.
