Although I cannot give you practical advice on how to teach them to read it. But the models they have generally fulfill your criteria and are relatively robust. If you want something left field Fortis has relaunched their Flipper some years ago, allowing you to change strap and case easily enough. Even better is a vintage Mini Flipper, which has the advantage of being hand wound and smaller, albeit will not be as easy to learn to tell the time with. Hope this helps!
