Fascinating! And I knew none of this . . .

 

. . . until now. 

Omega's code would've been OXG, which can be found engraved on movement bridges from the '40s to the '60s.  (Never observed OXW.)  I'd assumed the engraving was a tracking system established by Omega.  That it was legally required never occurred.
